Whether it was in kindergarten tracing our letters or sometime during an art project, once in our lives we may have all used stencils. Stencils are not just limited to letters and simple shapes. They can actually be used to make great, professional looking gifts for not that much money.

Where to Find Stencils: You may be able to find a few nice stencils in your local craft store, but those are usually pricey. To make your own you can find stencils online and print them out on thick paper. Once they are printed, you just cut out the part you want painted. The best stencil print outs are those that are in black and white with simple shapes.

How to Stencil: Once you have printed out a stencil on thick paper, cut out the color (either black or white) that you want to be painted. The best tools are a razor blade or exact-o knife. Depending on how detailed your stencil is, this may be a long, tedious process. Once your stencil is cut how you like it, tap it down to the object you desire to stencil. All you have to do now is paint it on. Remember that if you are stenciling fabric, a fabric paint is essential. It is also important to pre-wash your article of fabric if it is going to be worn. The best tools to use to paint are foam brushes or a cut up sponge. You can even use your fingers if you want. Pull off stencil when you finish so that it does not dry on there with the rest of the paint. Depending on what you painted, it can take up to two days to dry.

Things to Stencil: The list of things to stencil is almost endless. Here are just a few:
Clothing: Shirts, pants, underwear, socks, pajamas
Bags: Diaper bags, purses, tote bags, backpacks
Glassware: Plates, cups, candle holders (note that this requires a special paint)
Furniture: Couches, tables, desks, bookcases
Linens: Table cloths, sheets, pillow cases, blankets
Paper and cards

Stenciling may take some time, but it's easy and cheap price make it fun. Experiment with different colors, surfaces, and stencils. Stencil on!
