2006 in Melbourne has been a memorable year, with some events that will forver be engraved in our minds. They were happy, tearful moments, stressful and depressing times, but overall 2006 was a fantastic year.

The year started off with cyclone Larry Queensland. Although the Cyclone was no way near Melbourne, it had a devastating effect. Bananas! That's right, bananas! Almost the whole banana industry was wiped off the map by cyclone Larry, and this saw soaring prices for bananas all over Australia, and especially in Melbourne. $15 a kilo for bananas when the usual price was $2? It was absolutely devastating. The once loved fruit was abandoned and left to rot on store shelves as no one had that kind of money to spare with.

Then Todd Russel and Brant Webb got trapped down a mine in Beaconsville. The story was reported multiple times in newspaper and news programs all over the place. As Melburnians, we hung onto ever single minute of tension. We were there when they got trapped, when they got rescued and when they were free.

Then who could forget the amazing Opening Ceremony for the Commonwealth Games hosted in Melbourne, with the famous flying tram falling gracefully onto the set. It was a magical moment, and was celebrated by everyone. We Melburnians love our sport, and this was the perfect opportunity to show the world our love and dedication for sport. Also, remember whenever John's So name was called out and how the whole stadium roared with excitement. We love our mayor, and we love how hard working and dedicated he is to the city of Melbourne, which is of course why he was voted the number one Mayor in the world!
