I was researching for another article when I stumbled onto the Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. More than a cemetery, it also has a museum and an arboretum on the grounds. So I decided to dedicate an entire article to this fascinating place in Ohio. I will also discuss some of the famous peopl

e who are buried there.

The following facts about Lake View Cemetery come from their Web site which can be found at www.lakeviewcemetery.com/about_lakeview.html. It sits on 285 acres of land and was started 1969 and contains the final resting place of over 100,000 people.

Among the plant life to be found on the grounds are Daffodils, and Ginkgo. A stroll among the flora is well worth the time spent doing it. But it is the history of the place that interests me.

Famous people buried at Lake View Cemetery

President James A. Garfield and his wife are in a crypt below the Garfield Memorial Hall. He was the 20th United States President and had his term limited to 6 months. But for good reason, he was assassinated! Garfield was from Ohio and was in the Civil War with Ohio troops on the Union side. In July of 1881 he was shot by Charles Guiteau, he lingered on but died in September of that same year.

Elliott Ness is interned here as well and has a very nice monument. He was made famous by his pursuit and finally arrest and conviction of Al Capone. A great movie about this event is "The Untouchables" starring Kevin Costner and Sean Connery.

John Davison Rockefeller is one of the famous people buried at Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland. At one point he was the richest man in the world and gave away over Five Hundred Million Dollars during his life.

Carl Burton Stokes who when he became mayor of Cleveland in 1967 was the first African American to hold that post in a major city.

Edwin Converse Higbee started the first department store in Cleveland with a partner. Later after the partner's demise it became Higbee's. Still later it became Dillards.

So there is indeed a lot of history to be found at Lake View Cemetery not to mention the beautiful scenery. The monuments include Wade's Chapel, The Rockefeller Monument, The Elliott Ness and the James A. Garfield Monument.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes old cemeteries! Too bad we couldn't run into John Davison Rockefeller in our lifetime.
