Starting a new school can be very difficult, intimidating and scary. It leaves you awake at night, worrying about things like "What if I don't make any friends?" But don't worry, many people are going through the same thing as you, so here is a little guide about starting a new school.

What to do
Talk to people. That's right, just talk. Talk about anything you can, like what's your favourite soccer team, what school did you come from, what your interests... Talking makes you and the person you're talking about more relaxed and comfortable, and you get to know about each other too. It is also a great way to make friends when you're starting a new school.

Get active. Get involved with what's happening around your school. People like to see people active, around and about and doing things. Also by participating in school activities, you will meet more people and are more likely to make more friends.

Smile. People like you see you being happy, and it will be easier to approach you if you are smiling and not depressed or sad. Even if you're scared, worried and weird things are going through your mind, remember to smile.

Stand away from the crowd, not literally though, otherwise a teacher will ask what you're doing. Don't go with the flow, and try to be someone you're not. Act like yourself, stand up and be proud that you are unique and different from everyone else. When people see you're not a push over, they will come to you and ask to play with you and things like that. People like natural leaders and leaders don't follow the crowd; they stand up and act themselves.

What not to do
Do not set a bad image to yourself.

Do not go and start fights with people, or join in teasing someone. You will seen as cruel and mean by your teachers and peers. They will distant themselves away from you as they think you're a loser and a bully.

Don't be arrogant. Don't be "up yourself". People wil definitely think you're a loser, especially since you're new too. If you're arrogant you'll not very likely to make friends, unless you also find someone else who's arrogant, but you will be constantly fighting and arguing and won't go very close.

  • Remember everyone else is starting new too, and they are just as worried as you are.
