Wasilla Assembly of God Church and its Tax Exemption Status Bears Closer Look

liability for Democratic Candidate Barack Obama. Palin was baptized into the Wasilla Assembly of God Church at age 12 and worshiped there until 2002, according to SwampPolitics.com.

The Wasilla Assembly of God Church teachings are at issue because of their blatant political nature which dismisses half of the electorate as candidates for hellfire. The Huffington Post reported that Wasilla Assembly of God Church's pastor told his congregation that President Bush's critics may be banished to Hell. During the 2004 Presidential debates, the Wasilla Assembly of God Church's pastor said of John Kerry '... if you vote for this particular person, I question your salvation. I'm sorry. If every Christian will vote righteously, it would be a landslide every time."

Palin herself is in the limelight for mixing politics and religion by calling the Iraq War a task from God and suggesting that it is God's will that there be a new $30 million oil pipeline she advocated as governor. Her comments appear on a Palin church video here.

Palin's association with Wasilla Assembly of God Church and its unconventional teachings-such as the world is near its end and Alaska will be a refuge- may raise the usual questions about how a candidate's religious beliefs might influence his/her secular politics another notch or two. This questioning of a candidate's ability to separate the religious from the secular is neither new nor unique to Sarah Palin; it occurred in 1960 when John F. Kennedy was the first Catholic elected President and in 2004 when Senator Joe Lieberman, a member of the Jewish faith, entered the Presidential primaries.

Barry, they can have as much free speech as they want if they decline tax breaks but if they want tax breaks they have to follow the same rules as everyone else getting those tax breaks.

Why should any church be excluded from the right to free speech? Did not Jesus Christ himself engage in comments on the political leaders of the day King Herod,( "..go tell that fox..." - Luke 13:32) and the Roman Procuator Pontious Pilate (you hve no authourity ove rme unless it has been given to you from above... -John 8:23)? and then there is the Old Testemant. What of those who follow Islam? how many mosques ( but by no means All of the mosques) freely engage in open slander, and sedition of those who hold office? Why arfe Christians held to a double standard?

Robert I saw nothing in your "comment" that made any sense either. Did you actually read what carol wrote or were you too busy thinking up that "ACLU advocate" remark. Witty stuff. From what I read Carol didn't mention the ACLU one time. Maybe instead of looking for an agenda in other people's work you should read the article in question. Better still, write something of your own and let someone not read it and tongue lash it in the comment section. Give that a try.

Excellent job here Carol.

This comment is for the pastor and congregation of the church. Don't let this controversy cause you to change your statement of faith concerning the inerrancy of the Word of God.

Robert, the standard for determining tax exempt status has nothing to do with loyalty or faith and as far as I know, no one is questioning that church on either ground. If the church is engaging in partisan politics, it is not entitled to tax exempt status any more than any other entity engaging in partisan politics is.

You must be an ACLU advocate. This country was founded by God-fearing men on the principle that God was our creator, all men are created equal, and that we have say so about the state of our nation. Just because a pastor is a pastor does not disqualify them from their First Amendment Rights to Freedom of Speech. The ACLU has gotten completely out of control, and you won't find but maybe a very few christian lawyers, if any, in that organization. As far the tax exempt status of Wasilla Assembly of God, I saw nothing in your "report" that would cause me to question their loyalty to our country, and certainly nothing to cause me to question their faith as a church. If you take everything you read in the papers and hear on the news as the absolute truth, then you weren't there . . . . . .

All I know is that I would have loved to have heard Rev. Wrights comments in context, rather than just a snippet of G-D- America. Yes, I know there is no excuse for that, but still would have liked to have heard more of what he was at least talking about. These comments are at least given in context and that almost makes them scarier. I may be an exception, but I have never been in a church where a pastor discussed politics. I also resent the fact that Republicans think they are the only Christians in the world, or that if you are Christian you have to vote republican. I am afraid of any fanatic of any kind that thinks they need to enforce their beliefs on me or anyone else because they are the "correct" views in their opinions. Sarah wanting to ban books when elected is frightening. I am sorry, but that is Un-American. Now they are trying to remove the man in charge of her Trooper gate investigation (I shouldn't be surprised I guess) I think these folks just feel that the end justifie

I was momentarily interrupted. At the moment all the information overload in the media regarding her religious lifestyle reminds me of a feedind frenzy to render her ineffective as VP candidate. Its sad that so much energy is wasted on negativity.

I stand corrected when I refered to WAG as small fry. When I went to a tax exempt list for Wasilla, it was not listed. http://www.taxexemptworld.com/organizations/wasilla-ak-alaska.asp. The mother ship is Assemblies of God in Missouri, http://ag.org/top/index.cfm. Like any big conglomerate they hold the purse strings and keep a tight ship when it comes to holding on to their tax exempt status. They make sure rules are followed and address any failures. They know section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code inside and out. #1 rule, cannot endorse candidates from the pulpit, a 2002 IRS ruling clarified that pastors can be involved in campaigns as individuals rather than church representatives without jeopardizing the congregation's tax-exempt status. Only one church -- a New York congregation that opposed Bill Clinton's candidacy in newspaper ads in 1992 -- has ever lost its tax-exempt status due to political involvement. At the moment all the information overload in the m
