We all spend hours upon hours studying for all kind of different math's exams during high school. All those long nights we spend locked in our rooms upstairs with a mug of coffee, a pencil and the maths textbook. So it's only natural for us to think, "What' is the point in this? What is the point in spending so many hours dedicated to studying mathematics?"We all know that we need to know the basics of mathematics, like numbers, addition, percentage, fractions and you get the drift, but is there really a point in learning all those harder mathematical formulas and rules? The probably only times we use mathematics in real life is when it comes to money, like banking and shopping, and when we're cooking, right? I mean I don't want to be a civil engineer, or an architect or anything to do with that area of work, so what is the point in me learning trigonometry?
The truth is that mathematics comes into everything we do in today's society, whether we are aware of it or not. For artists, how many countless times have you used shapes to start off the basis of a drawing? This is mathematics, as we're applying a practical use for geometric shapes.
And who hasn't hosted a party and did simple algebra, such as "well, I'm having 20 people coming over, and each person can drink around 4 glasses of Coke maximum, so that's around 1L person, which means I'll need 20L of Coca Cola which equals to buying 10 2L bottles of Coca Cola".
And to anyone who plays music, you use mathematics so much you just choose to totally ignore it. A crotchet equals 1 beat, a quaver is half a beat and a semiquaver is a quarter of a beat, but how many beats does 2 quavers, 6 semiquavers and a dotted crotchet equals? Get my drift?
So what's the point in learning things like trigonometry, parabolas and calculus and all those other hard, impractical formulas and rules? Well I'm been thinking of many different theories, and I've decided on one. Spending all those hours studying for maths exams is all just so you're not limited in your job choice.
