These days Emotional Quotient (EQ) is being given more importance than IQ as it has been found that people with high IQs have failed to attain success because of their inability to handle emotions properly. In this context Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) are very useful because they enable people to overcome many emotional problems on their own without taking recourse to expensive sessions with a psychiatrist. Another advantage of EFT is that they also seem to alleviate physical symptoms that have an underlying emotional cause, the so called psychosomatic ailments. EFT being a totally self-help non-invasive therapy does not have any side effects.

EFT was developed by Gary Craig, an electrical engineer, who had trained under Roger Callahan in the Thought Field Therapy (TFT) system. The TFT system was very expensive and out of reach of ordinary people. After using TFT for sometime Gary found that many things in TFT were superfluous and he simplified them into Emotion Freedom Techniques, that can be easily used by everyone. EFT is basically rooted in psychology, acupuncture and kinesiology. Thus the EFT system came into being and Gary offered these techniques free from his site. A free EFT basic training guide is also available for download and people can use it for their own benefit. Since its development EFT has spread throughout the world and there are also many certified practitioners offering advanced EFT training all over the world in many cities.

The EFT procedures are based on the premise of traditional Chinese acupuncture and acupressure that negative emotions are caused by the blocking of the energy meridians of the body and removing these blockages help to bring the body and mind back into balance. The result is that the disturbances, both psychological and physical, are relieved without the use of any drugs or counseling. The procedure consists of tapping on certain points on the body with the finger tips in sequence, while tuning into the negative emotions. The tuning into negative emotions is done by uttering simple affirmations related to the ailment each time a point is tapped.
