Have you ever daydreamed about what the world will be like ten years from now? How about twenty? If you have grandchildren, have you imagined what it will be like to live on Mother Earth when they have children? A rather awesome mind game, and even more so after you see The Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore's movie about global warming.
On the drive home one evening after seeing the movie, I had an idea that anything I am working at to accomplish in my business needed to be important. It came to me that I truly needed to go to bed at night knowing I have done something to make the world a better place for generations to come.
Therefore, it became very important for me to offer tools to help people improve their attitude. I am very dedicated in encouraging teachers and parents to teach the language of feelings and provide their children and students with a strong preparation for life.
Though this is very rewarding, I could not help but ask myself, "What else can I do?"
The idea of the polar bear population shrinking within 30% in the next 45 years brings me a heavy heart and tearful eyes. To know that the glacier on Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, where a team was led by Sir Edmund Hillary to the summit in 1953 has retreated by three miles under global warming, and that beach erosion is wiping out dunes and waves that are becoming too big to surf, coral reefs are disappearing, and as many as one-quarter of the species of mammals, birds, amphibians, fish, insects and more could begin to disappear this century. What legacy are we leaving behind for our growing population?
If you are wondering what global warming has to do with attitudinal shifting and emotional literacy, I will be honored to inform you. It starts at childhood. A child absorbs his/her environment and establishes a foundational belief system that becomes the filter through which he/she perceives life. Beliefs such as:
"I'll never be approved of by my father."
"Others always get the good breaks."
"I've got to try harder to please-then I'll be guaranteed of love."
