The Mysterious Valentine

Suspects:

Erik

Stan

Robert

Brian

Amelia was an average eighth grader, making her way through the school when she paused to stare at the red envelope that was wedged into the door of her locker. Shifting the books to her other arm, she slid the envelope out and read the message on the front. "To My Favorite Valentine."

Putting her books on the floor, she quickly oped the envelope and read the card "Worshiping You From Afar, I Am Your Secret Admirer."

"Amelia?"

"OH!" she squealed, jumping against the lockers.

"Gee, Amelia," Cathy said with a grin. "Did you drink a whole pot of coffee before you came to school?"

"You startled me," she said, handing her the card. "You're not going to believe this!"

"What's this? Favorite Valentine? A secret admirer? I'm so envious of you, Amelia. I've never had a secret admirer. Wow! You are so lucky!"

Later that day, sitting across from one another in the school cafeteria, Cathy asked Amelia, "Do you have any idea who it might be?"

"It's got to be a guy from one of my classes."

"See if you can guess which one it is."

Lifting her juice carton, she stared thoughtfully into space. "Robert is in my home room and he's always staring at me. Erik is in two of my classes and he's always smiling at me. Stan is also in two of my classes and he makes an effort to approach me almost every day. Then there's Brian, he's in my study hall. He's never shown any interest, but he's just SO hot!"

Cathy laughed out loud. "So he's the one you're HOPING it is."

"Oh yeah!"

The fourth period bell rang just as Amelia entered the classroom. Students were milling around as she seated herself at a desk and got out her notebook.

"Hello, Amelia," Erik said with a warm smile, handing her an ink pen. "I forgot to return the pen I borrowed from you yesterday."

"You can have it if you still need it. I have plenty of pens."

"That's what I like about you, Amelia. You are always so kind. You really do look nice today."

"Erik, you wouldn't by chance know anything about a bright red envelop, would you?"

"A what?"

"Okay class," the teacher said when he entered the room. Take your seats and let's get started."
