I love to fish. I enjoy eating seafood and am an accomplished chef with a detailed knowledge of aquatic fauna. For centuries we have mismanaged the bounty of the seas, lakes and river ways. There is enough protein in the oceans to feed our planet forever but populations of valuable aquatic life are abused and squandered. The voracious Japanese have decimated whole communities of aquatic life (herring) and constantly harrow tuna, whales and all forms of lesser sea life.
If you've ever been on a big fishing boat you would be appalled at what is thrown overboard. All that is not the object catch is tossed back into the sea dead or injured. Many of the big boats are floating processing plants, there's no reason they could not turn the trash fish into a fine broth or even a sea of bouillabaisse. The most destructive fishing is done by those targeting the high profit catch; generally the larger predator fish such as Swordfish, Tuna, Ling Cod, Halibut and Salmon. Drag and tickler nets rack the ocean floor, upsetting the flora and destroying precious coral in search of shrimp. The seemingly inexhaustible populations of cod in the cold northern seas are now being dissipated by the insatiable Scandinavians and has been endangered since the year 2000.
Most of the International Fleet are now faced with limited seasons, quotas and restricted territory. Some countries operate rogue fleets and skirt maritime law. The Russians, Scandinavians and Japanese are the biggest pirates. Fish farmers produce inferior product laced with growth hormones and antibiotics. You may as well be eating the factory meat sold at the Wal-Mart. Midwestern grocers don't know how to handle seafood, often thawing previously frozen product to display as fresh. If you live more than a half hour from the sea you've probably never eaten fresh seafood.
