The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that Sony Electronics, Inc. has agreed to voluntarily recall 73,000 Sony Vaio TZ laptops. The Sony Vaio recall affects laptops with model numbers VGN-TZ100, VGN-TZ200, VGN-TZ300 and VGN-TZ2000.

The Sony Vaio recall is based on concerns that the laptops present a burn hazard. The CPSC and Sony announced the Sony Vaio recall after one person suffered a burn and 15 others reported their laptop overheating. Defective wiring or dislodged screws near the hinge on the Sony Vaio laptops are believed to be causing short circuiting, leading to the overheating.

The laptops affected by today's Sony Vaio recall were sold in stores from July 2007 to August 2008 and ranged in price from $1,700 to $4,000.

The CPSC and Sony are advising consumers with laptops subject to the Sony Vaio recall order to stop using them immediately. Sony will inspect and, if necessary, repair laptops subject to the recall. Laptop owners may call Sony toll-free at (888) 526-6219 anytime, or visit www.sony.com/support.

The Sony Vaio laptops are one of 3 products subject to CPSC recall orders for burn hazards this week.

Wolf Appliance, Inc. of Madison, Wisconsin yesterday recalled 24,000 gas ranges due to potentially faulty ignition in the smaller oven of the dual oven ranges. The recall was prompted by 97 reports of delayed ignition causing 15 minor burns.

Wolf Appliance ranges subject to the recall for burn hazards bear the model numbers: P48, PS48 or R48.

Home builders and appliance stores provided the Wolf Appliance 48 inch gas ranges with 18 inch ovens to consumers between January 1998 and June 2008. The ranges cost from $5000-$9000.

Wolf Appliance will provide free, in-home repairs to consumers affected by the recall. The contact information for Wolf Appliance is (866) 643-6408 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or www.wolfappliance.com. The CPSC recall notice indicates that the stove top and larger oven on the units may be safely used pending repair of the 18 inch ovens.

Wow, my Gateway often feels like it is burning my legs but I don't think it poses a real fire hazard . . .
