Computer Scams, Class Settlement Lawsuits Do Not Keep Auction Site from Making the Change

Paypal has been in the news lately for many reasons, including reports of increased phishing scams along with the announcement of settlement terms in a Paypal class action lawsuit (details about that below). Then there were the rather bizarre reports of a guy who'd reportedly sold stolen Victoria's secret bras on Ebay to buyers who had no idea the goods could be stolen.

Even as reports of phishing attempts continue - and Paypal users are a significant target for those phishing attempts - Ebay is requiring all sellers to move to paperless payments as noted on their updated site announcements here: pages.ebay.com/sell/August2008Update/Payments/. Paypal, of course, is a major option for paperless payments.

Huh? Does something seem....a bit screwy...about this picture? I have been a member of the Ebay community since 1998, buying and selling over 2000 times on the site, with a feedback rating of 100%. I think it is vital for anyone involved in online transactions to understand the realities of using sites like Payal, located here: www.paypal.com and often called Paypal.com during searches for the company. It is equally important to understand phishing risks, online scams and other identity threats involved in online business.

Paypal.com login problems, Paypal phishing and site issues

I've experienced a a fair share of Paypal login problems and phishing attempts and have been targeted numerous times by phishers attempting to get my Paypal information (and I'll bet many readers of this article have also been targeted, whether they know it or not). Some of these emails or other links look very official, putting people at increased risk. Most recently, Ebay had an announcement acknowledging that people trying to use Paypal on Sept. 4, 2008 were having checkout issues. That announcement can be seen here: www2.ebay.com/aw/announce.shtml and is one of many I've seen through the years. When buyers can't check out, my experience is that they can feel worried or suspicious towards both buyers and the site that has issues - sites like Ebay or Paypal.

I see the phishing scams in my inbox all the time. Luckily, the typos always give them away.

Important and ever timely information (unfortunately :) ).

Great reporting as usual, jcorn! I've had many phish emails pretending to be from ebay indeed. They are mighty sneaky these days... some really look authentic (though the email addresses they were sent from usually give them away). :o(

Thanks for the heads up, but this is so discouraging.

Great job reporting this. I get emails all the time from "Paypal" telling me I need to log in for some reason or another. I can see how people log in unknowingly giving all their info away.

I actually finally closed my selling account at eBay and half.com because of activity on my accounts. And recently we had to get a new credit card because it was compromised. I do a lot of buying on line and have never had that happen to me. Now I'm wary.

Thanks for this information. I want to both drop my paypal and ebay accounts. I have to keep paypal because of AC.

Super info. Thank you for sharing this. I use eBay and PayPal, too, and while I have not had any problems to this point, my eyes are always on the lookout for something suspicious like this.

I have had an a situation confirming an account of my son who is an associated content producer Robert Dougherty and when i phone them i was somewhat unsure i was talking to an employee. Asked first last name only first name given told not allowed last name then asked emplyee number and again nope cant give out then after asking my query ask where there location wouldnt give out that talked to supervisor he also wouldnt give his last name but he said his employee number . So times have changed and we are all open to the new era of robbery

Angie - I agree totally (and also with many of the other tips given by people here) I hoped that people commenting would share their experiences - as they have -and add to the information curve on this one :) I am still surprised by how many people tell me they click on email links and give away private info. It only takes a bit longer to go directly to the site yourself and verify info.

Great report.
