Jobs and positions are more competitive now than they ever have been before, so it is up to individual employees to put their best feet forward in an attempt to move up the corporate ladder. Career advancement is hardly guaranteed in most American companies; you have to show your superiors that you want to move up, which might mean a little extra effort on your part. Following are ten tips for career advancement.

Career Advancement Tip #1: Go the Extra Mile

You might think that you are all but invisible to your boss, but in reality, he or she probably notices more than you think. In order to start the wheels turning for career advancement, you have to show your superior that you can get the job done. When he or she requests a presentation to be completed by five o'clock, hand it in at three o'clock. When you're asked to re-organize the supply room, take your label-maker and do a better job than your boss could have ever hoped. It's the little things that will get you noticed in a hurry.

Career Advancement Tip #2: Request Extra Assignments

Prove that you are interested in furthering the company's agenda -- rather than just your own -- by requesting new responsibilities in your workplace. You might ask to be placed on a committee or team, or you could offer to pick up the slack when a colleague is falling behind.

Career Advancement Tip #3: Brush Up on Your Communication Skills

It is much harder to show your superiors what you are capable of when you lack communication skills. Really concentrate on improving your written, verbal and non-verbal communication, which might mean a firmer handshake or a more personable greeting. If you work directly with customers or clients, give them a reason to report your glowing personality to the boss.

Career Advancement Tip #4: Be a Problem-Solver

One of the traits that many employees lack is problem-solving. Can you think your way out of any situation? Do you have ideas that your company could implement to save everyone time, money and hassle? If so, get those ideas on the table and show your boss what you are capable of.

Career Advancement Tip #5: Pair Up

Takeaways
  • Ask your boss for new responsibilities and go the extra mile to get things done right.
  • Attend business functions whenever possible to get yourself noticed outside the office.
  • Always surround yourself with successful people.
