So what is meningitis? It is an infection of the spinal fluid and the fluid that surrounds the brain. There are two types of meningitis: viral and bacterial. Of the two types, bacterial meningitis is more severe and can result in brain damage or even death. Symptoms of meningitis usually include high fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting and light sensitivity. Anyone experiencing such symptoms should see a physician immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment is extremely important.
Bacterial meningitis can be treated effectively with antibiotics when detected early. The type of bacteria must be identified for proper treatment with antibiotics. In order to identify the bacteria a spinal tap is performed. The procedure requires inserting a needle into the lower back to withdraw spinal fluid.
Some forms of meningitis are contagious and may be transmitted through the exchange of throat or respiratory secretions such as in coughing or kissing. Those who have had close or prolonged contact with an infected individual may be at risk and should see a physician as well.
There are vaccines for some strains of meningitis, which all children should receive. Meningitis is often difficult to identify in infants. They may exhibit varying symptoms such as high fever, irritability, sleeplessness and lack of appetite. Seizures can also occur.
Although the symptoms of viral meningitis cause illness and discomfort it is rarely serious and usually runs its course within seven to ten days. There is really no treatment for viral meningitis and patients usually recover on their own with bed rest. Treatment is symptomatic to reduce fever and alleviate pain and discomfort. Good personal hygiene can help to lessen the chances of contracting meningitis but even the available vaccines do not protect against all forms of meningitis.
