Courseware Authoring: Design

The Basic Skills Writing Online course is a remedial class that is designed to assist adults who have not mastered the necessary skills to write papers and assignments for college. This class is expected to teach adult students the information they are lacking, so that they can successfully be able to complete written assignments throughout their degree program and careers. Roman (2006) said that writing is an important skill because gpeople tend to judge others by how well they express themselves both orally and in writing. A well composed letter says a great deal about a person.h The measurable performance objectives, content components, and description of relationship of a variety of other components provide an outline for how the class will work. It is believed that once the students have mastered the skills presented in the measurable performance objectives successfully, they will have also increased their level of confidence as writers.

Measurable Performance Objectives

The needs assessment revealed that the students taking the Basic Skills Writing Online course have low self-esteem in regards to their academic skills. It also indicated that their background and life experiences played a role in their low academic levels. The factors that effected each studentfs writing skills varied. They included poor teachers, overcrowded classes, lack of school resources, and no family and/or adult support for success. In order to heal the wounds from the hardships that the remedial students have had to face, the following performance objectives has been derived to raise the confidence level of the remedial students and make them comfortable with writing a five-paragraph essay.

œ Each student will learn how to use pre-writing techniques- brainstorming, questioning, making a list, diagramming, and questioning - to create the information they will write in their essays.

œ Each student will be able to organize their information successfully by putting it into an outline format.

œ Each student will create a clear thesis statement.
