It seems that the Metro Hotel in Woking, Great Britain, has a policy of turning away servicemen who want a room for the night. Metro Hotel is owned by a company called American Amusements Ltd. No one seems to be amused, however.

According to the Times Online, the policy came to light when one Corporal Tomas Stringer, a soldier with the 13 Air Assault Support Regiment, The Royal Logistic Corps, was informed by the staff of the Metro Hotel that it was the policy of the hotel not to accept members of the British armed forces as guests. Stringer, who was on medical leave from Afghanistan due to a broken wrist, was in Woking to assist in the funeral of a comrade of his who had been killed in action. Since it was late, Corporal Stringer was forced to spend the night in his car.

So far no explanation has been given for the policy and no response or apology has been given. American Amusements is headquarters in Woking and runs a number of amusement centers and hotels.

Naturally there is considerable outrage in Great Britain over the incident. Corporal Stringer's mother, Gaynor Stringer, from Criccieth, north Wales, said it best, according to the Times Online. "In America, they treat soldiers as heroes," said Mrs Stringer, whose son joined the Army when he was 16 and has done multiple tours of duty in Iraq, Northern Ireland and Afghanistan.

"We went to Disney World with Tomos and the whole family was moved to the front of the lines. Everybody was standing up and clapping and cheering.

"Here, soldiers can't even get a bed for the night."

The time is long past when it has been socially acceptable to spit on soldiers in the United States, as it occasionally happened during and in the wake of the Vietnam War. Even the most rabid anti war people feel it necessary to at least pretend to honor soldiers.

These bastards--the hotel and its corporate heads--need to be taught a lesson.

An injured soldier needs a place to sleep for the night - 'sorry we cannot help you. Please leave?' I am just appalled... Here is the website for the owning company: click on 'contact us' and send them an email telling them what you think!!!! http://www.thebigapple.co.uk/locations.php?location=Woking

Agreed. For those who question why the soldier chose to sleep in his car, think about the big picture, if you can. It was late at night; he was most likely tired, and in no shape to put up with this disgraceful mistreatment from other hotels in the area. Thankfully, he saved some money that would otherwise have gone to the sorry excuse for a business, Metro Hotel. I seriously hope that they do go out of business, and damn the managers that were complicit in this incident. They would have accommodated extremist muslims, ir homosexual activists, ironically, for fear of being labeled for discrimination. But, a wounded servicemember receives 3rd class service and no accommodation. No excuses for this disrespect on the part of the hotel.

My Dad, USN,Ret., retired in 1933. He often told me of how sailors and marines were discriminated against in many ports of call. I was horrified during the Viet Nam War when I heard the stories of our returning heroes being spat upon and called 'baby killers', etc. This is on a par with those shameful acts. Only 2 men have ever given their lives for others....Jesus and the American soldier. Brits are our brothers (and sisters) in arms and deserve the same love and consideration as our own troops I'd like to see American Amusements wiped out, financially, and its' executives expelled from our country, or tried for treason.

Just as the soldier appeared not to be welcome in American Amusements Metro Hotel in Woking then following the wisdom of Solomon the Director Michael Appleton and American Amusements should no longer be welcome in Great Britain. Kick the cretins out.

continued from previous comment....... THEN HIS BUSINESSES SHOULD BE IDENTIFIED SO THAT THE PEOPLE OF BRITIAN CAN MAKE A DECISION WETHER TO CONTINUE TO DO BUSINESS WITH A PERSON WHO TREATS MEMBERS OF HER MAJESTY'S ARMED FORCES IN SUCH A CONTEMPTABLE MANNER

This is truely a disgraceful event, a member of the military on medical leave for an injury sustained on active duty in Afganistan, in Woking to help organise a funeral for a friend killed in action and he is refused accomodation as part of the hotel's policy, because he is in the military. Would this apply if the soldier was female would she be left on the street ? Would this apply if the soldier was moslem, african, afro-carribean or of arabic origin since it would contrivene Race and Religion legislation ? the receptionist cannot invent policy so either a specific policy was in place or a policy that was open to misinterpretation was in place .... either way this company owes a huge apology to Corporal Stringer and financial restitution to him ..... and the Attorney General should institute inquiries as to legal action against this company, American Amusements Ltd and its owner Michael Appleton.. IT HE WILL NOT MAKE A COMMENT ON HIS COMPANY'S POLICY AND ACTIONS HIS BUSIN

-------continued from last comment---- an all expenses compensation package to our lad and his family , then sack the management . including the manager who refused to comment while he is safe in his £2m house ---ignorant b-----. american amusements you know what you have to do . you treated our lad worse than the enemy. we are supposed to be allies. i just wish i had the political power--then you would not be in business in our country.

words fail me , i am so angry at your management policy regarding one of our heroes. various stories abound like trying to blame the receptionist, my arse, all the management involved in making that policy should be deported with the full support of the american president at least. your own soldiers are treated like heroes . are ours any less, they are great men who help to keep all safe in their beds at night . no apology is acceptable , sorry is no good . get on your knees in public and beg forgiveness and sack ALL MANAGEMENT INVOLVED IN THIS POLICY NOW . THEN GET THE HELL OUT . IF A BRITISH HOTEL IN YOUR COUNTRY REFUSED SHELTER OF A WOUNDED AMERICAN SOLDIER ---WHAT WOULD YOU LOT SAY. we here in england would never here the last of it. i wouldnt p-- on you if you were on fire. i will remember the name of your company untill my last moment and will NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER ENRICH YOUR MISERABLE EXISTENCE WITH MY PRESENCE. in summary -----BEG FORGIVENESS NOW AND OFFER

I can onl wish that your Co. goes bankrupt. Your hotel policy is a discrace. All the men and women in the military that have served their countries and GIVEN their LIVES so your pathetic Co. can do business in a land of freedom. I ask all true patroits to not purchase one item that your Co. has anything to do with. I am an American and I am so proud of our British allies. Your hotels should be boycotted by all. In closing your CEO is an A-Hole.

we cancelled our trip...i think my hard earned money is better left in my pocket instead of in the bank account of traders....

Posted on 09/05/2008 at 5:09:24 AM

If that company is American owned we should deport the CEO. British soldiers are a class act.

This incident is horrible. I hope the hotel management received angry mail demanding an explanation. He was a soldier who needed a bed, and an injured one as well. I am sure a night in the car was not what was best for his recovery.
