Dr. Gary Chapman has a wonderful book out called the Five Love Languages. He talks about how we each have different love languages and express love differently and as couples we need to learn what our spouse's love language is so we can effectively communicate our love for them. One of those love languages is Words of Affirmation. What that means is we express love and feel love through the words of our loved one. Words of Affirmation could be one of the most common ways to communicate love. It may seem very simplistic, yet at the same time it is very complicated, and many people have a hard time using their words to express their love. We need to learn how to use our words effectively and help our spouse feel loved and appreciated instead of unappreciated. One thing that Dr. Chapman said in his book was "Verbal compliments or words, are powerful communicators of love." Everything we say to a spouse can be a sign of our love, or make them feel unloved. Our words have more power than we really think they do. Showing our love could be something as simple as "you look wonderful tonight" to something more complicated to "I love you." Our words can honestly either make or break a relationship. Even Solomon knew this when he said "the tongue has the power of life and death." He knew that whatever was said would either hurt or strengthen a relationship. We need to really think about the things we say to each other. There are times when we don't realize that our words can have such an effect on someone. Our words of appreciation show our spouse that we really do appreciate them instead of trying to get them to do something.
