One of the most common summer activities in France is heading to the local Fete or in English festival. In fact if you are travelling around France in the summer time you will notice numerous signs announcing a local festival. Pretty much every large and small town in France holds a local festival.

The partying tends to go on all night and includes dancing, eating, drinking and just having fun. Many of the French festivals celebrate local produce and culture. If you are in France during the summer make some time to enjoy a real part of French culture by visiting a local festival. In this article are some of the festivals happening in France during the summer months. They are divided up by region.

Alsace

In Alsace you will find France's oldest music festival. This festival is held in the city of Strasbourg throughout most of June. It is a celebration of classical music with numerous live performances happening throughout the festival.

Aquitaine

This multicultural region of France that borders Spain has a lot of summer festivals. There are a few that are particularly worth noting. In the town of Port Sainte Foy and Foy La Grande is a wonderful festival that celebrates Occitane culture. Occitane culture has been part of societies in the south of France, parts of Spain and Italy for hundreds of years. This festival is held at the start of July

In Biarritz, Aquitaine's main town and a popular beach resort is a festival that celebrates Basque culture. This area has a heavy Basque influence which is evident in the food and architecture of the region. The Basque festival consists of traditional games, sports and entertainment. This French festival runs through the month of August.

Auvergne

In this stunning region of France there is no shortage of entertaining French festivals. One great family festival is held around the second week of June in the town of Clermont Ferrand. This is the Fetes Medievales du Dauphin d'Auvergne. This is a completely medieval themed fair with crafts, historical re-enactments, entertainment and even horse riding.
