How to Turn a Photo into the Shape of a Butterfly in Photoshop

Open your Photoshop program and let it load. Then click File > New to create a new canvas. Create the canvas 400 pixels by 400 pixels. Set the background color to white and click OK on that window.

Create a new layer in your layers panel. If you do not see your layers panel then press F7 on your keyboard. Click the icon in the bottom of the layers panel that looks like a sheet of paper with the corner curled up. That will create a new layer.

Select your Custom Tool from your toolbar. You will need to click on your Shape Tool and hold it down until the box drops down, then click Custom Shape Tool. At the top of your Photoshop window you will see the word Shape and a drop down box beside it. Drop that box down. On the right side on that box you will see a little arrow. Click the arrow and click Nature. That will load your Nature Shapes in your Shape Box. Click on the Butterfly Shape.

Now draw your Butterfly on your canvas. You can draw the butterfly whatever size you want. The size of the butterfly will depend on what photo you want to use. After you draw your butterfly, move on to the next step.

Left click one time on your Shape Layer to highlight it. Then right click on the same layer and click Rasterize Layer from the pop up menu.

Go to the top of your Photoshop window and click File > Open. Locate the photo that you want to use and open it.

Select your Rectangle Marquee Tool from your toolbar and draw a square or rectangle around the part of the photo that you want to show in the butterfly.

Go to the top of your Photoshop window and click Edit > Copy.

Click back on the other window with your butterfly. Click on the Shape Layer one time to highlight it. Then go to the top of your Photoshop window and click Select > Load Selection. Then click Edit > Paste Into.
