Yes, that's right. I said it. MySpace is evil. And I'm not talking about the pscyhos, perverts, and serial killers. No, MySpace has yet another dark side.

The teenage years have always been tough- dealing with the opposite sex, hormonal explosions, bullies, acne, grades, the list goes on and on. Now teens can add "MySpace" to the list.

As a mother of two teenagers, I've read the horror stories about MySpace and seen the television specials. I've made my daughters keep their information private, only allow friends to join that they know personally, and done all of the safety precautions that experts suggest.

So I was totally unprepared for my daughter coming into my bedroom crying the other night. Why? Because of MySpace, believe it or not. This is the daughter that always keeps her chin up. She has had her share of lows and I have rarely seen her cry, even when she was much smaller.

Granted, our family has been going through a lot lately. She has a troubled friend that causes her to worry. Her father has been half way across the country for most of the year. And yet she has always managed to get by with a smile on her face despite everything.

So imagine my surprise when she appeared with her mascara smeared and streaked across her face as she leaned in the doorway. With everything going on, all kinds of ideas ran through my head. Had her friend gotten into more trouble? Was she sick or had she gotten hurt?

"What's wrong?"
"_____ (omitted name) just took me off of her friends list on MySpace."

Okay, I'll admit it. I don't have a MySpace account. But I have heard enough about MySpace in my house to know that every MySpace account has a list. This is a very special list. It is called the "friends list". The owner of the MySpace account can allow everyone on their friends list or pick and choose whom they want to appear on their list. It can be rearranged, people can be removed, people can be added.

Takeaways
  • MySpace is another stress that teens have to deal with today.
  • The MySpace friends list carries a lot of power.
  • Teenagers use MySpace to humiliate and hurt others.
Did You Know?
More than half of MySpace visitors are over thirty-five years old.

What's worse is when a "friend" posts a questionable picture. I was looking at a MySpace profile, and a teen girl had posted a picture of her friend in a bra and underwear. Why she allowed her to take the photo in the first place is another story, but even some of the things I've seen on MySpace posted by adults is disgusting. They end up incriminating themselves. They risk their jobs, their reputation, and most of all their self-respect - if they had any in the first place. What are they thinking?

I have no doubt many teens (and some adults) can relate to what your daughter felt. Sure there are some good sides to myspace, but there's no denying that some use it for hurtful purposes as well.

I think this is crazy all this talk about myspace just because someone was took off someone's list, myspace has some good stories too.I should know because i have one,i hadn't seen nor heard from my daughter since she was 18 she was living in a different state and i was worried to death about her and thanks to myspace me and my daughter was reunited. So see myspace does have some good things to come out of it.

Lee Ann, you don't mention your age. If you are a teenager and your circle of friends isn't caught up in MySpace, that's great. It also seems unusual. Since I have two teens and a college age son, I'm around quite a few teenagers. Their lives don't revolve around MySpace, but it is an important way for them to communicate with each other. My daughter is self-confident, as mentioned. Her best friend intentionally removed her completely. That was the point- teens use MySpace to deliberately hurt others.

This is a completely one sided argument. Maybe it is because I am from such a small town, but I have never heard anyone complain that they moved down a few spots on someone's Top 8.. or maybe they have completely disappeared from the Top 8. No one seems to care here. In my opinion, the people who complain and whine that people have moved them down a few spots or taken them off the list, are completely weak and have no self confidence. I have no idea who is on my friend's top 8, nor do I care. People make out MySpace to be so much worse than it is. The few people that wear next to nothing and are 12 and post picture of themselves wearing next to nothing and the kids who are "Stressed" out about MySpace make everyone else look horrible. They make us look like Internet, MySpace addicted freaks that don't have lives. I'm sick of it.

Digital shunning- excellent way of describing it. Who knows? It could be the next catch phrase. And you're correct. It makes no sense to care about some random online list, and yet in today's teen world, it is the equivalent to being voted "Most Popular" in the school yearbook.

Digital shunning just like the Amish do, only with computers. Yes, that sentence made no sense, but so does putting so much emotional stock in myspace. You really highlight the fact that myspace is an adolescent site that is unfit for adolescence.
