True Blood, with Anna Paquin, Debuts on HBO

3
Right away one finds out that True Blood is taking place in our world, but not quite. It is quickly established that vampires are "out of the coffin" as it were, thanks to a new Japanese synthetic blood soft drink. Humans are a little uneasy about this.

It's not just Bill Maher tut tuting with a vampire guest about the "history of exploitation", but a nice sign, no doubt left by the Westboro Baptist Church, that warns "God Hates Fangs." And so do some humans, apparently. But True Blood, so far, is not about them. One human loves one vampire all too well.

And then there is Sookie, played by the luscious and all grown up Anna Paquin. Sookie is a waitress at a dive a small town in the middle of a Louisiana swamp. Sookie, whom Anna Paquin played with a combination of southern sas and young girl innocence, can read minds. This can be rather embarrassing as she slings beer to patrons, who regard her in her shorts and tight shirt, and wonder what it would be like to have a side of her along with their Bud Light. She's a lady, thank you very much, and doesn't appreciate being thought about in such a manner.

Enter Bill the Vampire, played by Stephen Moyer, into her establishment. His smoldering, bad boy style good looks are enough to fascinate Sookie. But she also cannot read her mind. There is nothing like a little mystery to attract a young girl trapped in a small town in the middle of the swamp.

Ryan Kawnten plays Sookie's brother Jason, who gets in trouble with the other girl who loved a vampire only too well. Rutina Wesley plays Tara, Sookie's rather high maintenance best friend. Due to her inability to keep her mouth shut and her tendency to delight in being easily offended, Tara is just plain trouble.
