Could our potential Hockey Mom in Chief best the One?

Remember, before there was the One, there was The Great One - for some of us, even determinedly non-sports fans like myself, there was a magical time around the end of the millennium when Hockey briefly mattered. For me, it began in a sweaty, padded group huddled around a battered black and white TV at the Crystal Palace. ("nickname: The Rat Rink", for exactly the reason you imagine) This was 1980, when Herb Brooks and his amateur bladesmen* defeated the Soviet Juggernaut. And at almost exactly the same historical moment, born from the ashes of that mighty conflagration, Gretsky (The Great One) emerged on the scene like the Phoenix. Or at least like the Phoenix's pet Coyote.**

For myself and the nation's tweens, we now had a vessel for our burgeoning interest in hockey. We began grimly tucking our jersey's into our Cooperall's to the strains of Def Leppard's "Pyromania", as our collective Dad's blearily trucked us from rink to rink. By the way, this was way before "hockey moms", an appellation of which I am still somewhat suspicious - frankly, my Mom could *never* get my laces tight enough. Which actually raises some excellent debate questions: did Governor Palin use a skate key? Did Bristol start with Figure or Hockey skates?

A great description of the of the demise and fall of hockey, which I find upsetting. I love hockey, I love soccer, I love football, and I'm sorta fond of baseball and basketball. I don't play anything but I'm a hell of a fan!

I am an American and I have to agree with you Tommy! What's really mind-boggling to me is that with all of the problems the United States is facing with the economy, Republican oppression, wars, etc, it's unbelievable that anyone would find merit with someone as Scary as Sarah Palin because she might do something good for the sport of hockey! Let's get real here. I really can't believe how stupid and one-sighted the American people are. I love my country which is why I'm scared out of my mind about what may happen in this election. McCain/Palin are just wrong!

The only country in the world where soccer sucks at the professional level is America. Didn't you guys ever wonder why you cannot play the biggest sport on earth? It's because Americans suck at soccer. The rest of the world gets it, Americans need to deal with their inadequacies like men. Football=rugby for wimps!

As a major non-sports enthusiast (except for Soccer..which is the best sport on earth) , I especially enjoyed the last few paragraphs. :-)
