How to Make Your Own Halloween Sound Effects

In the world of digital you can type in a variety of web addresses that allow you to mix and combine sounds to create your own eerie mixture of Halloween sounds. Point, click and drag, and you've created your own CD of spooky Halloween sounds. But where is the fun in that? Creating your own mixture of spooky Halloween sounds is much funner. Here is a step by step guide to creating your own eerie mixture of slamming doors, piercing screams, and dragging chains.

GETTING STARTED...

Grab your tape or CD recorder and your set to get started. Of course, if you're going to be doing a longer tape with a variety of different sounds that will last 20 or 30 minutes, you will want to make sure that you have a lot of your materials next to you and ready to go. It might also help to have a list written of the sounds you want to play in order so you aren't just randomly thinking up sounds, getting stuck, and then stopping the tape. If you keep stopping and restarting the tape to add a different sound the tape is going to have a very rough, staccato sound to it. Enlist a few friends and family members to help out, and you'll get a fun collection of sounds.

HOWLING WOLVES...

Nothing is eerier than hearing a howling dog on a cold night. Many scary movies show wolves howling in the middle of a moonless forest, the innocent victim not knowing where or what the wolf wants to devour next. Grab a few people and have them mimic the low 'oooo' sound of a wolf. Add an occasional howl or two.

SLINKY SOUNDS...

Head to the bottom of the stairs with your tape recorder and have another person stand at the top of the stairs with a metal slinky. Have them send the slinky down the stairs. As the slinky picks up speed, it will give off the sound that something eerie and creepy is coming closer to you.

BALLOONS...

To mimic the sound of a gunshot, grab a pin and a blown up balloon. Pop the balloon to add an element of shock to your tape and make your guests scream in surprise!
