You Can Put Lipstick on a Pig; it's Still a Pig
What is the Obama lipstick controversy? Does Obama wear lipstick? Did Obama put lipstick on a pig? Was there a play on the Palin lipstick on a pit bull comment? Is there a brand of McCain lipstick? No!
In a breathtaking move that makes an issue out of a non issue, the Obama lipstick comment has been taken out of context, twisted by those with a rudimentary knowledge of photo shop, and then mentioned side by side with the Palin lipstick on a pit bull comment. Voila! One political controversy served right up!
Media Matters accurately depicts the context in which the Obama, lipstick, pig comments were made: it is the tried and true metaphor used to showcase that something might be prettied up with a lot of window dressing, but underneath the item itself has not been changed.
Did The Obama Lipstick And Pig Actually Belong To Dick Cheney?
It would appear that Sisu has found a 2004 post that mentions lipstick and pig when Vice President Dick Cheney refers to John Kerry's protestations of being a suitable president in a time of war.
This brings up the question if the lipstick Obama used actually belongs to Cheney. The use of the pig is questionable, since it might have been turned into pork barrel spending fodder in the last four years.
Joe Biden Glad He Did Not Offer Obama Lipstick When He Called Him Articulate
When he referred to Barack Obama as a conventional African American and then suggested that Obama was clean, articulate, smart and attractive, Joe Biden thankfully avoided any references to lipsticks or pigs. He was taken to task by Josh Marshall - as reported on the Language Log - and called a bigot, but at least he was not a misogynist.

Already Barack Obama is coming out wearing the mantle of righteous indignation at having his words taken out of context. Not so fast! It appears that he who sits in the glass house should be careful with throwing stones! Fact Check reveals that Obama has been railroading McCain with more comments taken out of context than just a lipstick on the pig comment.

Rovian tactics at their absolute worst.
I think Barack thought himself crafty for using Palin's now infamous joke. I don't think he was comparing her to a pig, but I do think that his audience thought that. Which probably didn't bother Obama too much.
My thoughts: I think his remark was just poorly timed, considering the joke she said. Of course, he also said something about old fish being wrapped up.... which some attribute to him referencing John McCain. And then there's Joe Biden, who asked a wheelchair bound man to stand... I try very hard to remember all of my own gaffes (and trust me, at my old work, I am infamous for enough of them). It is hard to be perfect when the eyes of the media, not to mention their mics, are on you every second of the day it seems.
