To Make a Literal Interpretation of the Bible is Not Only Wrong, Its Dangerous

In recent years the growth trend in churches has been among those claiming to be "Bible believing"  and with doctrines that describe the Bible as the literal word of God.  In fact, so-called "Liberal" churches have lost membership while the fundamentalist congregations keep attracting new members.  Some might argue that this is nothing to be concerned about, people can believe what ever they want.  True, of course.  When it becomes a problem is when these people try to use their beliefs as a guide for how they believe the World should be.  Its fine to believe in any religion or god a person chooses, as long as they don't try to force those beliefs on others or on the system of Government.  One could believe the Tooth Fairy created the World in 10 minutes, but when they try to teach it in schools, that's another matter.

For example, if a person took a literal interpretation of the Bible, than the entire planet was flooded by water that came as rain for forty days and forty nights.  The only survivors being the family of Noah and two animals from each species on Earth.
A big fault in the story would be sheer size.  A modern day aircraft carrier could not hold two of every species on Earth.  And then there is the problem of where all the rain came from.  Our atmosphere is not big enough to hold all the water that would be required to flood the Earth. What about diversity?  Did Noah go down to Australia to drop off the Marsupials?

The Bible literalists have explanations for these, as well as any other contradictions that might be found in the Bible.
For example, one explanation of the water problem is to say that the Earth passed through a giant deep space water vapor cloud.  Water does not exist in deep space except as ice.  If that much water was to come to the planet from space, old Noah would have had a lot more to worry about than keeping the tigers from eating the rabbits.  It would have destroyed the planet.

Takeaways
  • The literal interpretation of the Bible is dangerous.
  • The Bible myths are not grounded in science.
  • To the literal believer, science is an enemy.
Did You Know?
A modern aircraft carrier could not hold two of each animal on Earth.

First of all, there are certain parts of the bible that can be taken literally and others that are not. Some parts that are literally interpreted can be applicable to people's lives while others must be read with consideration to the society, customs, ethical norms and the place at the time the bible was written. Therefore to interpret everything that was written in the bible literaly is wrong, but the bible itself is not wrong. For example, if the bible is interpreted literally then there is no doubt that it favors subordination of women to men (inequality), owning slaves or people as personal property and many others, which we all know and consider unethical and wrong in our society today. However, you can interpret loving one another as you love yourself and submit to one another in reverence to Christ literally.

One last thought provoking question: What does Matthew 7:13 mean by: 13"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

All I know is that I believe every word of the Bible. I believe that it is God breathed (Holy Spirit). If I'm wrong, no big loss in eternity, but if everyone else is wrong, they face a mighty big loss in eternity. However, all of the Bible arguments are not what is going to split the peas when the ends of our lives arrive. What is going to make the difference is if we have each been poor in the spirit and have repented. In other words, have we all seen our spiritually depravity and ungodliness? God is a holy God that can not be around unholy things. Therefore, the only way we can be in His presence is by excepting what His Son did for us on the cross, and asking for His forgiveness (repent) of our sins. We do this through prayer, and it has to come from the heart and it begins with conviction of His Holy Spirit to show us our sins.

If the Bible is not taken literally then it becomes easy to question any part of the Bible. Jesus, Virgin birth, His death and resurrection. What's left then? Nothing that can save us, that's what Paul, said: 1 Cor. 15:16 For if the dead rise not, then is Christ not raised: And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Easy to question adultery, petrifying, homosexuality as not being wrong. Of course it's easier to do away with a literal interpretation of God's word, then to be persecuted for your stand.

ah - whatever, right? i read the bible to gain some kind of mystical wisdom or whatever, but i find that master Yoda has more accesible teaching that i can use on a day to day basis. There is no try! Only DO!! Plus it's hard to put my faith in a book that's been openly re-written according to different kings to better suit "their version of religion". I do like alot of the stories and whatnot and wish i could understand it better if there is something there to understand. But seriously, folks. If GOD is going to write another book MAKE IT SIMPLE and TO THE POINT!!!! Maybe you'll have less genocide in your name G!!

The ark was 150 feet long, 75 wide, and 45 feet tall. There were about 35,000 animals on board. Do the math. They had tons of room left for food.

David Byrne said it best: "Facts are simple and facts are straight. Facts are lazy and facts are late. Facts all come with points of view. Facts don't do what I want them to. Facts just twist the truth around. Facts are living turned inside out. Facts are getting the best of them. Facts are nothing on the face of things. Facts don't stain the furniture. Facts go out and slam the door. Facts are written all over your face. Facts continue to change their shape."

Not all Christians believe the Bible is a literal representation of historical fact. There are inspired truths in many great literary works that are concealed in parable, myth, fable or some other teaching medium. If the truth that we do not understand everything we think we understand can be accepted, then when we try to answer questions that deal with those issues we run the risk of error whether we cite ancient texts, religious formula, or scientific theory.

The only reason Christians oppose the theory of evolution is because it contradicts the specific Genesis 1 creation myth. It is not because it denies God. It simply does not ask the question about God, because that question is beyond its scope.

To say that since the theory of evolution does not explain the origin of the four amino acids it is somehow not legitimate is to completely misunderstand what the theory is about.

Migillicuddy - evolution does not seek to answer every question regarding the origin of life. It looks at the available data and draws the only conclusions that it can from them.
