Ways to Overcome Your Fears and Be a Better Step-Parent
A blended family is where two families, normally both sets have kids, decide to form on family usually after a separation or divorce in a previous relationship.
With both families having there concerns and worries, no wonder why it seems almost impossible to get along with one another. Being a confident step-parent means realizing that there are going to be complications along with favorable moments. Just keep in mind that someday you will all
look back and probably laugh at the things that you may have said or did to one another.
You should recognize that a blended family may not always work like a natural family does. Always remember that a step-parent is not a replacement parent and no matter how awful the other parent may have been the kid's will still find that mother and father are sacred words and may not feel comfortable calling or treating anyone else like their biological parent.
Next you have to realize that kid's may not always listen to you because they feel that you have no right to tell them what to do. Disciplining a child usually works best at first if you and your spouse do it together so that the child sees that he can not treat you with disrespect by not listening to you. Just make sure that at first you go slow into this role and do not come on too harsh.
It is usually best if the two of the parents set down and discuss what their children's boundaries are and stick to them without slacking off or showing favoritism.
Let it be known exactly what everyone's job description is in the family. We need to make sure that we are as detailed as possible. Remember that there are no ex-parents just ex-spouses and no matter what that child is always going to love their parents.
Keep in mind that the kids may feel left out or betrayed at first but eventually if you try to compromise then they will come around to realize that they can all be a happy blended family.
