I have been overweight for as long as I can remember. In 2002 though, I put on a lot of weight. Now, I have been on several diets and have spent time depriving myself of all my favorite foods, only to have the diet fail because I was miserable. A diet that deprives the body of a certain food group will make you lose weight, but is it healthy? From the time we were born most of us have had the food pyramid shoved down our throats and know how important all those food groups are. Then why is it, people go on diets to avoid these foods? Is it really good to completely cut out a whole food group? What are the effects of doing so? Should people value being thin over their health? Does a low carbohydrate diet really work?

The Good Points of a Low Carb Diet

People who go on low carb diets do see results. In fact, they start to lose weight rather quickly and lose a lot of weight. A low carb diet also helps people who have diabetes. For diabetics a low carb diet can help to lower their blood sugar levels. Also diabetics will lose weight while on the low carb diet, which will also help them to lower their blood sugar levels. A low carb diet also keeps people from eating bleached flours and refined sugars, which are bad carbohydrates. Many people don't know that you can become addicted to carbohydrates. The more bad carbohydrates you eat, the more addicted you become. A low carb diet can be healthy, if people only lower the bad carbs that they consume, but most people go far beyond that.

Hmmm... I just started a GL (glycemic load) diet a week ago, and already I feel great! I did it for energy, not for weight loss, but my pants are loose so I seem to be losing belly fat. However, this diet is well-balanced, includes abundant vegetables, and fruit in moderation. I have to agree that cutting out starches and sugars is a big plus - I used to be on an energy rollercoaster, and kept craving more and more starch and sugar. I guess whole grains would be okay, in very small portions and eaten with plenty of protein, fat, and extra fiber (preferably from vegetables), to avoid the sugar rush from the starch, which is still very abundant in whole grains. I think I'd rather get my carbs from vegetables and fruits than grains, though - if you eat less grain, you can eat a LOT more fruit and vegetables, and never be hungry.
