The Fascinating Mayan Culture - Why So Special? With the emerging interest in ancient Mayan culture, it becomes evident that very little is known about this mysterious ethnic group, people who were once our Southern neighbors. Anyone who studies Mexico and Central America will learn something about this intriguing culture. They are famous for the Mayan calendar and the striking architecture of ancient temples and pyramids. For those planning a trip past America's borders to Mexico, here are some great Mayan sites to visit and explore. Pack your canteen, a map, and a love of history and adventure, and get ready to board a plane to the Mayan civilization.
The Beautiful Pyramid of Kukulkan
Your first stop should be Chichen Itza in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Although some of the Mayans' land was located further south, many of their most impressive sites are located in this country. Expect to feel small as you stand in front of the massive pyramid known as Kukulkan. Built well over 1,000 years ago and located in an area that was once home to many, this huge monument is a must-see while traveling Mexico. Make sure to stay for the fantastic presentations that kick off when the sun goes down.
More To See At Chichen Itza
Another large building at Chichen Itza, though in ruins, is worth a visit. This place is known as the Ball Court. Ancient versions of the ball games we play in modern times were practiced in Mesoamerica centuries before our time, but with much more violent consequences. Take note of small architectural wonders found scattered throughout the area like sculptures of sacred animals; these make great photo opportunities.
