There is a growing nutritional lifestyle that reaches beyond being a vegan or vegetarian. Believed to be a natural means of health and nutrition man people worldwide are turning to fruitarians. Fruitarians believe that eating only organic, raw foods is the means to a healthier lifestyle. It sounds like a healthy lifestyle, but there are pros and cons to a fruitarian diet.

Fruitarians established their nutrition system by looking to nature. They seek to eat raw fruits and vegetables, just as they are presented to by nature. Fruitarians will eat sweet and non-sweet fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, coconut water, natural juices, and water. Fruitarians do not include meat, dairy, grain, or pasta in their diet.

Pro of Fruitarians Diet: Eating like our ancestors

Before processed foods, man ate what was offered on the vine and from the tree. It's a pretty neat concept considering the nutrition available in natural, organic foods and the way God wrapped them all up in their own packaging, or skin.

Con of Fruitarian Diet: Eating like our ancestors

Proteins are the building blocks of muscles. It stands to reason that our ancestors, lacking equipment and advanced tools, needed to build their muscular strength and endurance to carry out their job as hunter-gatherers. It makes sense that they included meat in their diet.

Amino acids which are the building blocks of proteins do occur in certain fruits and vegetables, but have to be eaten in specific combinations with other foods, usually wheat, to form a protein.

I don't think the fruitarian diet today is exactly as our ancestors ate. However, many will affirm that eliminating meat is a healthy way of eating.

Pro of Fruitarian Diet: Preserves vitamins and minerals

Raw food contains more nutrients than cooked food. Just as slightly crisp steamed vegetables are better than boiled, mushy vegetables; raw vegetables contain more nutrients than both. Considering the diet of most Americans is high in junk food and lacking in nutrients, the fruitarian diet seems somewhat appealing.

Con of Fruitarian Diet: Junk food eaters require an epiphany to change

I first heard of the fruitarian diet when I was a child, so it's been around for a while. I'm not sure I could change and only eat this kind of diet though. Interesting topic for discussion, Lyn! Sophie

Call me a Neanderthal, but every once (or twice or even thrice)) in a while, a big juicy whopper with fries calls out to me to come and enjoy a gastronomic delight.

I know someone who has done this as a means of minimizing effects of menopausal hormonal fluctuations. Interesting.

I don't think I could do this diet. There aren't enough different types of fruit that I like. I'm a strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, orange kind of girl. I like peaches but it is hard to find ones that are really ripe. I like apples, but my teeth don't. So I'd be in trouble.
