Al Pacino and Robert De Niro -- Stars of "Righteous Kill": My Impressions Working Alongside Them on Movie Sets

I had the opportunity to work as a background actor alongside both Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. With Mr. Pacino, it was on the set of Ocean's Thirteen; with Mr. De Niro it was on the not-yet-released "What Just Happened?" Though these two men are both legendary American actors of
Italian descent, their personalities couldn't be more different - at least not according to my observations of them on the aforementioned movie sets.

Observations of Al Pacino on the set of Ocean's Thirteen

Al Pacino plays casino owner Willy Bank in the third installment of the series, which stars an ensemble cast and was directed by Steven Soderbergh. I was cast as tuxedo-clad high roller and was fortunate to work on a number of scenes featuring Mr. Pacino. Much to my delight, the AD always made sure I had a beautiful young woman clutching my arm. Fringe benefits. But I digress.

Any background actor who is a professional- and wants to continue to work - knows not to approach movie stars on movie sets. If they approach you - which does happen every now and then - that's fine, but it is a cardinal sin to approach them for an autograph, or to hand them a script, or just to shoot the breeze. That being said, it bears noting that Mr. Pacino seems like a very approachable fellow. I worked multiple days on the movie and he was always in a good mood, always gracious and pleasant, always cracking jokes and having a good time.

Observations of Robert De Niro on the set of "What Just Happened?"

This movie has not been released yet, but it is a comedy directed by Barry Levinson and stars Robert De Niro as a Hollywood producer whose career is on a downward spiral. I was fortunate enough to get several days work on this movie. Mr. De Niro had an obsequious personal assistant at his beck and call. The assistant would shield Mr. De Niro from the sun with an umbrella - even if it involved a short walk of a few yards. Perhaps Mr. De Niro has a medical condition that prohibits him from being exposed to the the sun. If that's the case, then he's off the hook; if not, well, you can draw your own conclusions.

I love the word "obsequious"! What a great personal accounting on two very talented actors. Now I'm going to have to watch Ocean's Thirteen to see if I can spot Hartley.

I think Robert de Niro is just very, very arrogant. And I I ever meet him I won't ask for his autograph, just for the heck of it. What an excellent article Hartley! Thanks. :)

I cannot see either of those two accepting a dud script, so I will ignore the critics and see it anyway. The best critics are the ones buying the tickets, and they know good acting when they see it. I will forever remember sizing up a car trunk as being either a 2 body or 3 body trunk, a memorable DeNiro line.
