Communications has become the true liberal arts major. Communications is a wide genre containing many smaller fields of study. Encompassed with it are media studies, film studies, advertising, public relations, rhetoric, philosophy, women's studies, and others. In this vein, Edinboro's Communications Masters of Fine Arts program is full of state of the art classes which are each specially designed to be taught by a faculty with specialties in each field.

As a beginning graduate student, I was not quite sure what to expect from a graduate program in Communications. I had enrolled at Edinboro University based on their reputations in other departments. I was hungry for new things to learn and a tougher level of experience in my field.

After my first semester there, I could see that my advisor would be willing to help me chart out a set of classes tailored to my likes and dislikes. He was able to recommend classes I might find interesting in the specialty field of my choice. By my last semester, I was thrilled to have written a Master's Thesis based on an area of study that fascinated me and that was supported by the department. Several professors offered me their editorial opinions as I wrote, and in the end I had an opus that I could be proud of.

If you are looking for an education where you will be another face in a crowd, then Edinboro is not for you. None of my classes had over thirty students in them, as Edinboro's Communications department is particular about who enters it. If you enroll at Edinboro you should certainly expect to be asked for your opinions during class. Few if any lecture classes are provided by the department, the popular format being discussion based.

For the value, Edinboro cannot be beat. The classes are challenging, the professors enlightened, and the cameraderie first class. If I had to choose a graduate school to go through again, I would certainly go back to the 'boro.
