Music influences our society more than most people realize. When you get into your car, you turn on the radio. When you walk into the shopping mall, music is playing in the background. Many of you listen to music at home and in your workplace. Music is everywhere, so it's natural that music influences the way we think. I'm not saying that if you hear a song about something, that you are going to go out and do what the song is talking about. I'm just saying that music influences us in many subconscious ways. Sometimes I'll hear a song, and it will take me back to a certain time and place. Only music has that power over me, and over many people. Music touches our day to day lives, and it is a very tangible thing to the common people of America. So instead of choosing a great leader or a politician to be the most influential person of 2006, I thought it would be only fitting that this person would be an icon for all the common people out there. I also felt that the only person that could possibly fill this roll was a sensational musical artist.

While John is now and will be forever influential, and "American V" was my pick for album of the year, the video for "God's Gonna Cut You Down" was dreadful and I had blocked it out of my mind until now. The song is about all of us, but the video is filled with celebs who look like they were trying to be in something cool, like an A-list party. Kristofferson, Bono, and Keith Richards are understandable because they knew and worked with the man, but Owen Wilson and Kanye West? Puh-leeze!! Unknowns from around the world would have been more poignant.
