Campus Security Important for New Students

When a new student first arrives at a college campus , they will typically concern themselves with academics or dorm living, and safety and security issues may not be considered. Some students may have already toured a campus prior to moving in, but typically only the best side of an institution is shown. So, how can someone get a real feel for the level of security on their campus?

One way is to speak with security personal and ask them to provide you with the college's annual security reports which they are required by law to provide. It is also important to find out the type of security provided at institution. Every campus is different. Size of the school and the city in which it is located are factors that can determine the scope of the Campus Security department. Some will have a small contracted security staff while others will involve a large police force with full authority. Dormitories can be a safe haven, but also a security risk if not properly protected. Be sure to note the security around and ease of access into the residence halls. Check to see if there is someone available to monitor the check-in of guests. Note how access is gained to individual rooms, observe the presence of fire alarm pulls and security doors, and be sure there are no obstructions in front of them. Also, see that no exit doors are propped open (after move-in) so that security is not compromised. It is important to get to know your residence hall's individual staff members and where they can be contacted in case of an emergency.

Many students will also access the campus at night for evening classes and study. One of the first things students should do is locate emergency call boxes and check that the campus is properly lit . Ask whether security vehicles are patrolling the grounds after hours, and if security escorts are available for those attending night classes. Always try to get someone to walk with you if you will be out after dark.
