Marriages in this world today are failing at a monstrous rate. In fact, statistics now say that there are 3.6 divorces per a 1,000 population in the United States alone.

When you delve into all the scary statistics about divorce, you can feel a little lost. In fact, the average newlywed couple today w ill admit that more than once every week does one or the other partner feel like just throwing their hands up, giving up, out of pure frustration.

And while we are aware of the mounting pressures we are all faced with today - including financial, emotional, and even moral (with more and more "family"-geared advertisements portraying lude and sex-emphasizing material) - this awareness does little to help.

So it's up to each and every one of us to employ certain things in our marriages to make sure that we are doing everything we can to offset the air around us - an air that is determined to tear our union and our family apart.

And while I hope to continue this series of articles with many items you can employ in your marriage, here is just one:

Read with your spouse.

No, this does not mean that each of you take up your favorite novel, newspaper, or magazine and sit in the same room as one another while you silently take in information apart from one another . . .

What it DOES mean, however, is that you both communicate about what you feel would benefit you both, what you both would enjoy reading, and you sit down together at a designated time to read it aloud together.

What my husband and I enjoy doing is having a weekly Bible study program together. It allows us time to cuddle up together and study something truly informative - something that can actually save our lives. And when we engage in in this program, we discuss what we are learning. My husband usually takes the lead and asks me viewpoint questions, and I give my input. And if I have any questions, I may ask him or simply pose the question and we can do some more research together.

Other times, we may simply read the Bible together. In this case, we take turns in reading a paragraph in the Bible and sometimes even do the voices of different characters.
