2006 was a major year in news for the St. Louis, Missouri area. The biggest news story of the year, of course, was the Cardinals winning the world series. It was a bright light in the news scene for St. Louis, as most of the other news stories reported this year were grim. Another major headline was the July 19th and July 21st storms in the St. Louis, Missouri area which caused many to be without power for days. On a more somber note, Abigail Woods made national headlines when she was kidnapped from her mother's home after the attacker slashed her mother's throat. An even bigger tragedy happened weeks later when a pregnant women was found with her unborn child cut from her womb, her three other children were later found slain as well. These stories, both happy and tragic as the may be, were the major headlines for St. Louis, Missouri during 2006.

The Cardinals winning the world series was without a doubt the biggest news story of the year in St. Louis, Missouri.The Cardinals only had 83 regular season wins. Most people didn't even expect them to make it past the first round of the playoffs. Then they beat both the San Diego Padres and the New York Mets in the playoffs, but the Detroit Tigers will still favored to win the World Series by a long shot! The Cardinals surprised everyone and won the world series four to two. The 2006 win was the Cardinals first world series win in twenty-four years, although they did loose the series in 1985,1987, and 2004. It was a very special win for everyone in St.Louis because 2006 is the inaugural year of the new Busch Stadium.
