Of the dozens of weight-loss plans currently on the market, perhaps none are as expensive or as effective as Medifast, a low-calorie, low-fat diet that promises weight loss of two to five pounds per week. Medifast products come in individual packets that you mix with water, shake, microwave or refrigerate to create a daily diet of between 800 and 1000 calories to guarantee faster weight loss than other traditional diet plans. Available Medifast meals include shakes, bars, puddings, soups, chili and oatmeal.

When using Medifast, most customers adhere to the "5 and 1" plan, which includes a daily diet of five Medifast meals (limit of one bar per day) and one "lean and green meal," which includes up to seven ounces of chicken, turkey or fish, of up to five ounces of beef, pork or lamb. The Medifast "lean and green meal" also includes two cups of salad greens and up to ½ cup of raw vegetables, or up to 1 ½ cups of cooked vegetables. You can also use up to two tablespoons of Medifast low-fat salad dressing.

The secret behind the Medifast plan is that the low-calorie diet "causes fat stores to release free fatty acids that are converted by the liver into an energy source called ketones, putting the body into a mild state of ketosis, which helps you achieve rapid weight loss while not losing muscle tissue," according to www.medifast1.com. Medifast claims it takes the body up to three days to achieve this level of ketosis. Another component of the Medifast plan is eating the six meals at two to three hour intervals throughout the day, to help prevent against hunger or fatigue.

To get started, women and men can order 4-week packages of Medifast meals for the cost of around $275. This includes a sampling of some of Medifast's most popular items. Based on the message boards on the Medifast website and some of the success stories of Medifast users, the program has been deemed highly successful by those who follow the plan faithfully and do not cheat. Cheating will cause the body to fall out of ketosis, and it will take up to another three days for the body to achieve that state again.

Did You Know?
Some of the downfalls of the Medifast plan include the high cost. At around $275 per month, plan to spend up to $1500 in order to lose up to 100 pounds. That doesn't take into account the cost of the "lean and green meal."

I have been on medifast for about 3 months and have lost close to 40 pounds. My goal is 80 pounds - so I am nearly 1/2 way there! I have started 'shedding' my hair the last 3-4 weeks. I am not losing it all, but definately notice an increase in shedding. I was expecting it as my health coach with Medifast prepared me. She explained that it was due to the fast rate of weight loss. If any of you have had children, you might relate it to the hair loss that you might have experienced a few months after giving birth. I remember losing large amounts of hair a few months after each delivery and was told it was my bodies natural hormone adjustments. I am not going bald, nor do I plan on it. In fact, nobody but me has even noticed! I am sure that all my hair will grow back once I reach my goal weight, a price well worth the weight loss. One quick comment about the cost of Medifast. I am spending SIGNIFICANTLY less money on food, not only for me, but for my family of 5, now that I am

I experienced some hair loss with Medifast. This is my second time starting the Medifast diet. When I begin to properly include my fat serving such as canola oil the hair loss stopped. You can't read what you want and make up the rest and expect nothing but weight loss. Also, I cheat on the diet also. Usually on weekends. I don't go overboard and eat at fast food joints. But, if my kids are having ice cream, I will enjoy a 1/2 cup of sugar-free, low carb ice cream. I'm still losing. The important thing is to know how to get back on track and do not binge eat. Like one commenter said, take the 15, 000 dollar surgery or stay obese!

I just ordered medifast and Im afraid of hair loss, Im 20 years old.... about 150 and I really don't want to experience hair loss :-(. Is hair loss normal for everybody???????? I just want to lose 50 pounds, but Im not sure If I want to give up my hair for it...I was on Jenny Craig before, I lost about 85 pounds and gained about 30 back later. I wanted to try medifast to try something different. If I'm on the program for about two months, will hair loss occur within the time? and how much hair is possible to lose?

Betsy, your hair will grow back. I lost 100+ lbs on Medifast years ago. I, too, lost quite a bit of hair but it came back. Thick hair? Thick body? It's a choice.

I just started Medifast for one week and have lost 5 pounds. I had tried it 2 times before, but what made the difference this time is the use of their new "momentum" lines-they suppress appetite and give you enormous energy!! I was doing Jenny Craig 3 year with barely any weight loss-I have 70 more lbs to go-and want to get the weight off before I have any really serious health issues such as diabetes. It is cost effective and really works!

Contrary to what a previous commentor said, Ketosis should not be confused with ketoacidosis (diabetic ketoacidosis or the less common alcoholic ketoacidosis), which is severe ketosis causing the pH of the blood to drop below 7.2. Ketoacidosis is a medical condition usually caused by diabetes and accompanied by dehydration, hyperglycemia, ketonuria and increased levels of glucagon. The high glucagon, low insulin serum levels signals the body to produce more glucose via gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis, and ketone bodies via ketogenesis. High levels of glucose causes the failure of tubular reabsorption in the kidneys, causing water to leak into the tubules in a process called osmotic diuresis, causing dehydration and further exacerbating the acidosis.

I am just shopping around and researching if I want to do Medifast. It seems that most comments are coming from Medifast Sponsors or Affiliates that have a gain in promoting Medifast. I am a nurse and if you are losing hair, that is a great concern. Also putting your body in a state of ketoacidosis doesn't sound healthy either. Just my 2cents.

I've been on this diet for two months and lost 28 pounds. I cheat every Saturday, and don't see any issues. Get a wig! I would rather be skinny than go through the fat life. I love this diet and plan on losing another 25 to 30 pounds. I have not found any draw backs. I find it cheap compared to going out to lunch and all of the other things that go along with every day life (stopping to get chips and a coke). Long and short is that the diet is great and I finally have found somthing that works. John

Help......I've successfully been on Medifast since June and looked "skinny" and beautiful for my daughter's wedding in August. BUT now I am loosing handfuls of my hair and am devastated. After many blood tests to try find the reason nothing has come up except...Medifast. As of this week the doctor has taken me off Medifast to see if this is the problem. In all my research before I started Medifast I read no warnings regarding possible hair loss. Why? Please help...I like my blonde hair.

Our society has become a fast food society. Fast food is cheap and easy. But it is also the reason we have become such a fat society. The simple truth is that healthy cooking and plan will cost the same as the medifast program. When you are faced with 100 pounds to lose, and your options are a 25,000 dollar surgery, diet plans that don't work, or the medifast plan at the same cost as a normal grocery bill...medifast will win out. As for the side effects, a high protein diet can be tough on someone who has eaten nothing but junk for the bulk of their existence. Hair loss is due to the rapid weight loss. Hormones are stored in the body's fat and are released when the fat is burned. The hair grows back. The bad breath is also temporary as it is a result of ketosis. All in all, this plan is safer than others out there, doctor recommended, and proven to be the best weight loss diet on the market. It does take will power, but it is easy to follow and has given back lives to so man

Medifast works. It is that plain and simple.

Wow another ignorant, want-to-be writer. This is the single most proven weight loss method available to the general public. Clinical research has shown over and over that this is a highly successful program. There have been entire weight loss clinics devoted to offering this exceptional system to the public. I just wish these authors would do more then read the FAQ page of a website. Notice the Author states what she liked and disliked in the plan, but never states, how long, how compliant, and how successful they ultimately were. Short-sighted comments in my opinion.

The author here claims that the food is intolerable, highly expensive and made more expensive by the fact that you have to buy your lean and green food items. If one would take the time to tally what they would normally spend for food per person per month, they would find that this program is more than reasonably priced. As for the taste of the foods, the variety of what Medifast has to offer is so high that even the most finicky eater can find something that is palatable. If not, there is a recipe board on the Medifast website to make these meals more palatable. You can find everything from cookies and muffins to fudge that can be made from these meals. Try doing that with Jenny Craig or Nutrisystem! Also, compare the price of these other products to Medifast and you will find the cost quite similar. The difference would be the ability to change the food to something you may like just isn't there with the other plans. Please get your fact straight when you publish something Medifast

Medifast program while not for everyone, is a very good and sound, and proven program. the Taste is truely subjective. What is not pallitive to one is delicious to anther. go too the message boards to see that. the opinion of one is not a valid reason to do or not do a diet program. Why not take an opinion pole, why not get all the facts before publishing these articles? No people are alike, So only speak for yourself, not for others............
