The Atlantic Ocean Coast of Georgia is dotted with pristine islands that are terrific places for a getaway or retreat. The Golden Isles of Georgia are a group of four barrier islands that are part of the Sea Islands on the Atlantic Coast. Vacationers who travel to these island retreats can enjoy the character of historic lodging on the seacoast. Historic Hotels of America has three member hotels on the Georgia seacoast, including Greyfield Inn on Cumberland Island, Jekyll Island Club Hotel on Jekyll Island and The Prince and King Club on St. Simons Island.

Greyfield Inn on Cumberland Island

Cumberland Island on the Atlantic Coast of the southern state of Georgia was designated a National Seashore by Congress in 1972. The designation protects the area from development. This sea island is a nature lover's dream, with pristine shoreline, wildlife and over 300 species of birds in their natural habitat.

Greyfield Inn is a graceful colonial style mansion that was built in 1900 for Margaret Ricketson, who was a member of the Carnegie family. Greyfield was one of four grand homes built on Cumberland Island by Lucy Carnegie for her children.

The romantic hotel has preserved the Victorian era, looking much as it did when the Carnegie family was there. Family portraits still grace the walls. Rooms are furnished by many family heirlooms, such as Victorian antiques, Tiffany lamps and Chippendale pieces. The well stocked library holds first edition books and classics.

Greyfield was opened to guests in 1962 by Margaret's daughter, Lucy R. Ferguson, as a way to ensure the property's preservations. Accolades have included Top 500 on Travel and Leisure's World's Best Survey, Top 10 Most Romantic U.S. Hotels by Travel and Leisure and a listing on the "Stay List" in the National Geographic Traveler.
