If you believe that everyone else is having a wonderful time planning for the holidays, eagerly waiting for Christmas Day, you are wrong. The Christmas season is often times the worst time of year for many people. What makes it even worse is believing that everyone else is on this great gleeful emotional high. Happily buying presents, and excited about spending time with their gloriously close knit family.

Truth is most families have had some kind of disappointment, or trauma to deal with. If not during the year then in the not so distant past. Sometimes it is in their childhood, or in their adult life. Sadly many people are divorced or their parents or children are divorced. There are split custodies, or fueding families. Children off to war or worse yet, injured or killed in war. Not to mention accidents, illnesses and other injuries.

Then there is the job lay-offs or cut backs. Catastrophes such as Katrina, or other major weather horrors. People who have lost their houses to fires, or floods and house foreclosures. Major illnesses and deaths in the family are also just a few of the things that many are suffering.

Then of course there are just the run of the mill depression and addiction and domestic violence problems, affairs and family squabbles. Now if you weren't depressed before you should be by now.

So what is the solution for you, assuming you are dealing with something like this? True there is only so much you can do about your problems. You may not be able to stop your father from drinking or get over your divorce. You may not be able to spend Christmas with your kids or your family, but there are things you can do to help with your depression.

Takeaways
  • You are not alone. Many people suffer from holiday depression. They think that everyone else is happy and they are the only ones who feel down.
Did You Know?

This is a fantastic article, and I'm sure it will help many people. I find myself feeling down now and then, and I have to remind myself that there are people with far greater problems than mine. I was feeling somewhat down this evening, and this really helped my mood considerably. Thanks!

Great article. Have you heard about the "Blue Mass" a lot of churches have been holding for people to cry out their grief during the holidays? It's a hard time for many people.

I am glad that others can relate, well I guess, it is sad, that it is supposed to be the happiest time of year, but it does help me to look at what I have to be grateful for. thanks all

Great article Shana. It is true people tend to think they are alone in their suffering. And the gratitude suggestion is very worthwhile and helpful. Great job!

Great article, Shana. As you know this Christmas I'm not so up myself because of my wife's medical problem. However, your article cheers me up.
