VTech's ia5824 is a nice choice of basic phone for cordless users. Several features are included to add convenience and overall ease of use. A back lit keypad is one of those features. Not all phones offer this and
you'll be glad to have it at times. The phone book which holds up to twenty different phone numbers is another one of those features. You might not think much of it at first but it comes in quite handy. So many of us these days are use to the cell phone remembering our numbers for us that we have seemingly forgotten how to remember a number in the first place. Even if you don't have that problem you'll still appreciate having your most frequently called numbers on hand for you rather than trusting things to paper or your long-term memory.

The frequency of 5.8 GHz is a good thing because it makes the ia5824 less likely to interfere (or be interfered with by) other appliances such as your wireless mouse, keyboard or microwave. Additionally, the higher frequency is less likely to be a concern in regards to eavesdropping. That's only because the lower frequencies have been in use longer and therefore those airwaves are more crowded. A caller id is build into the ia5824 which holds up to 45 phone numbers. This in combination with the back lit keyboard keeps you from having to turn on the lights or leave the room if someone calls while you are watching TV for example.

An answering machine is not built into the ia5824 but if you have an answering service via your local or long distance provider then the phone will notify you when you have a message. Most phone service providers do offer this feature at no extra charge. Just check with yours first. Speakerphone is one other thing you won't find on the ia5824. Many of us never take advantage of the feature even when it is available, but it's good to know in case speakerphone is something you rely on or strongly prefer.
