Surely you have heard the saying that "those who can't, teach"? Well, this may not necessarily be true. In fact, if you are an expert in your field, teaching a class or workshop or speaking at a conference can be a great way to further your career and promote your business. When you think of teaching, you may think of teaching in a traditional school or college setting. By expanding your understanding of teaching to include workshop leaders, conference speakers and those who teach adult education and community college courses, you may be able to see the possibility for teaching a class in your field or specialty. When you attend a conference, all those speakers and workshop leaders are usually individuals who are excelling in a particular interest area. Chances are, they promote their business, product, books or services in the process of sharing valuable information. If you are an expert or have valuable experience and information, you can be one of those speakers and teachers as well.
Consider putting together a proposal and contacting conference coordinators or the administration at your chamber of commerce or local adult education program. Most of these organizations are always on the look-out for interesting new topics and individuals to teach them. There may not be a lot of financial compensation involved when you are first getting started, but it is a great way to promote yourself, make contacts and promote your business or product.
The more versatile and experienced you are, as well as how well you perform as a speaker, the better your chances of getting invited to do more speaking or teaching. Organizers like individuals who can speak on various topics and who will organize their own class content, provide handouts or coordinate their own visual aids. The more proficient you can be at these things, the more valuable you can make yourself as a speaker or teacher.
