Cambridge Coffee In Auburn Alabama: A Review

I stopped in at two coffee shops on the edge of Auburn University's campus recently. The first shall remain nameless, for it committed the sin of Christian Rock n Roll -- an oxymoron and a kind of sin, purists of either rock music or Christianity will agree. Not

to mention it's about as cool as the rainbow Jesus-lover afros you used to see in the crowds at Monday Night Football. Not the vibe for coffee.

The second coffee shop, Cambridge Coffee (131 South College Street, Auburn, AL 36830), is the one you want.

Ask yourself, What would a coffee lover do?

He, she, would stop in at Cambridge, first opportunity.

Here's why:

The coffee

When you find a coffee shop that knows iced coffee isn't regular brew poured over ice, you know you've found people who know coffee. The iced coffee is properly brewed: dark, chilled, and only then poured over ice. Cambridge's iced coffee is smoky, strong, and smooth.

The cookies

I had the chocolate chip. They're big, thick, and taste all right. Not as good as Mom's, or even an ex-wife's. But good. They had plenty of chocolate and not too much sugar. There's an array of other pastry choices, too, from muffins to danishes to cheesecakes.

The gelato

Five flavors shining under glass.

The furniture

Red and brown leather sofas and upholstered armchairs. Tables are suitably round, dark, smooth. Even the chairs at the tables are unnoticeably comfortable. Ease without consciousness of being ease, says a Taoist, is true ease. These chairs are in the Tao.

The internet

Wireless fills the inner space, and reaches out to the sidewalk tables under their parasols. Ordinary enough. But what's not ordinary is the personal way the password is delivered to you. Ask for it and see.

The vibe
Air conditioner was a little too cranked. Music was acoustic Dylan, Denver and the widest possible scope of similar artists.
