SAFETY FIRST! When cutting down a tree, always make sure that the surrounding area (including the path the tree will fall on) are clear of people, animals, vehicles, power lines, houses or anything that could sustain damage.

Step 1: Make sure that you have your safety equipment on correctly and that it is functioning properly. This will aide in preventing possible injury.

Step 2: Make sure that your chainsaw is full of gas and oil so you don't run out of them in the middle of a cut. This will greatly shorten the life of the chain. It will also ensure the job goes smoothly.

Step 3: Start the chainsaw and allow it to warm up for a few minutes before using it. Always follow the instructions in the chainsaw manufacturer's owner's manual. You want to make sure you get the most use out of it.

Step 4: Consider your surroundings and determine which direction you want the tree to fall in. Make a safe area that the tree can fall in. IMPORTANT: If the tree is leaning in the opposite direction of where you want it to go, always make sure that you can still cut the tree down safely. If you have a rope you can wrap it around the tree and have a vehicle pull it in the direction you want it to go. Make sure you do it correctly and practice proper safety measures. NEVER climb a dead tree or one that looks unsafe as they can break and cause serious injury or even death.

Step 5: Make a notch by cutting a horizontal line roughly as deep as the bar on the side of the tree where it will fall. Then make another cut above the horizontal one at about a 45-degree angle so your top and bottom cuts will meet. Now you are ready to make the back cut, which is the last cut you will need to make before the tree comes tumbling down.

Step 6: On the opposite side of the tree, make a horizontal cut roughly 1 to 2 inches above where your first horizontal cut was made. Once the tree starts to lean in the direction that you made the notch, make sure you are a safe distance away from the tree. Don't forget to yell "Timber" as the tree falls down.

That's all there is to it!
