My Opinion on Why Its Crap

You've no doubt seen the trailers on TV; a large dragon, a blond boy, creepy black things. Eragon, a movie based on the book of same title by Christopher Paolini, released in theaters yesterday.

First self-published by Paolini Inc, Eragon was later picked up by Random House, given a new snazzy cover, and promoted to death. Rising to the top of nearly every bestseller list, it was (and still is, for the most part) spouted as the new "it" book of children's lit.

My opinion, as those of thousands of others, are not so positive.

Okay, first I admit to reading both of the books in the Inheritance trilogy by Christopher Paolini. I grabbed the first one because I saw the picture of the dragon on the front, and I thought it would be interesting. I read the second, Eldest, because I thought "Hey, he's older, perhaps his writing has gotten better." I was wrong on both accounts.

There is an interesting thing about the Inheritance trilogy; the fact that nothing in it is interesting...or unique...or creative.... It is Star Wars plot with Tolkien characters. If you have ever watched/read either of these, you can not argue that Inheritance isn't a rip-off of them. Paolini did not even attempt to veil the similarities. Without revealing too much, here's a little snippet:

Eragon is a poor farmer boy. He doesn't know his parents. He lives with his uncle. He finds out that he is special. His uncle dies. He is guided by an old mentor.

I'll stop here because I don't want to give away the (I gag upon writing this word) plot. But if you want to know what happens without reading the books, go rent the original Star Wars movies-you'll find everything out, and in a far more entertaining way.

its pretty sad that your tearing apart a person who at least made the attempt to write an entertaining story. also there is no such thing as an original story plot so the theme of star wars was taken by someone else and when it was made people were pitching fits over its lack of a unique plot too. give the kid points for trying .

15 or 51! He coulda still been more original!

OK first off, he is sooo full of himself. Did he really consider that he was anywhere near as good as Rowling OR Tolkien?????? PSH, wait another at least 25 years to even at least be in the same ball park with Rowling. Yes he did write it when he was 15, but it was prolly crap back then. It was prolly put through a polished and refining machine. and i just realized!!!!! I sent my manuscript to a contest at Random house!!! NOOO, they publish ERAGON!!!! I dont even want to be in the same company as him, crap i cant take it back now.

Paolini only achieved what most people talk about because his parents published his book and Random House took it up for the sake of it being written by a 15 year old, not because Paolini's books are worth anything. If someone's parents publish their book and then when a big company publishes it by continuously pointing out the young age and getting the John Jude Palencar to make the covers, people should know it's crap. And it is.

Many books that are published are crap!

Tristin - Yes, the Da Vinci Code was crap, I agree. It doesn't matter if he was fifteen when he wrote the first one [he was in his early twenties for the second one], if he's going to publish a book, it needs to be good.

Although I like very much the book, I admit in all sense. The plot of the books is very similar to star wars with characters of Tolkien. But he wries pretty good for being 15 years old. I have also written some pretty long books (2 to be exact) and I admit that many other young author's creation are much better than this one.

he was 15 for god's sake..... get the fuck over it! a hell of a lot better than the da vinci code, in any case...

Hendrix - yes, similarities, not rip-offs. I have written my own book [two, actually] and for all you know, I could be your favorite author! :) Also, the second comment -thats crap. A publisher/agent can read an article and tell if they can market the crap out of it and make $$$. Considering the book was already finished, Paolini didn't have school and was free to ship around the world, they jumped on the chance to make $. Frank - why, is that what you do?

And what do you read? Cheap porno mags?

Posted on 01/03/2007 at 5:01:00 PM

the reason the stories are sitting on shelves is because the author needs to believe in his or her story. A publisist will read a story and can tell if the author has faith in his or her own work.

Would like to point out that most stories have similaraties these days. A tip i keep coming across for new writers is think of your favourite story ( film/book) retell the story how you would have wanted it to go. But hey why are people being so negative about Christopher Paolini, just because he has achieved what most people often talk about. Instead of putting the man down. Write your own book and get it published. I bet you will come across people who say your book is a copy of another story.
