How to Install a Timing Belt on a 1988 Though 1997 Isuzu Rodeo, Trooper or Pickup

This is a recommended procedure every 60,000 miles due to the stretching of the belt beyond the limits of the tensioner. This same procedure is used on all 1988 through 1997 Isuzu Rodeos, Troopers and Pickups.

This particular engine is an interference engine - in the event that the belt should come off, damage would be done to the engine - most likely caused by the pistons hitting the valves. Since this is an interference engine, do not turn the cam or crankshaft with the belt off. This
can cause damage to the engine. Never turn the engine backwards, only in the normal direction of rotation. Depending on the engine, normal direction of rotation may be counterclockwise or clockwise.

Remove the drive belts, cooling fan and upper timing belt cover. Turn the engine clockwise until the timing marks are aligned. The camshaft pulley will have a mark or notch on the front between the teeth and there will be a dot on the head. When properly aligned, the marks will be straight up. Align the crankshaft pulley with the line on the block. The crank pulley will have a 'v' notch and the block will have a line under a bolt, which when aligned, will leave the marks straight up. The keyway will also point up. Remove the water pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley bolt. Remove the crank pulley and the lower cover. Loosen the tensioner pulley and move it away from the belt and lightly tighten the bolt. Tighten it enough to just hold it in place.
