A Hands on Approach to Educating the Middle School Child

For middle school students, focusing on education can be a daily challenge. With hormones raging and academics challenging the mind, educators, teachers and parents find great challenge in retaining t
he attention of the easily distracted middle school child. One such academic program, facilitated by the Mongtomery County Public Schools, has found a unique alternative to science classroom studies. Appropriately called Event Based Science, the educational curriculmn created by this school district offers teachers and educators the tools to retain the attention of adolescent chidlren.

Event Based Science has been recognized with many awards and achievements in the academic sciences program. Offering curriculm in earth science, life science and physical science, Event Based Sciences uses an educational process they like to call "Total Engagement Learning System". While some programs are avaiable for purchase, the Montgomery County Public School system has provided free educational science tools on their website at www.mcps.k12.md.us. Through these programs, children learn to use a hands on approach to develop scientific theory and technique.

One such free program is a combination math and science curriculmn designed to engage the minds of both adolescent genders. Using a sports based theme, middle school children are provided with real life scenarios in which science and math connect. Supported by the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, the sports based real life science program incoroporates fifteen lessons built on biology, math and even physics, providing these middle school children with a great opportunity for a solid foundation in math and science as they enter high school.
