Treating depression is a process and not something that can be cured by one doctors office visit. The first step to be completed is coming to the realization and admitting that you are suffering from depression. Depression symptoms include but are not limited to: constantly feeling tired, being very irritability, major mood swings, and thoughts of suicide. A lot of people who experience symptoms do not seek treatment because they are embarrassed or do not believe that the medications actually work. Here are some tips on how to effectively get depression treated.

Admitting that you are a sufferer is sometimes the hardest step for most sufferers. It is important to understand that you are not alone in your feelings. Thousands of people suffer from depression and it has been medically proven that depression is a chemical imbalance in your brain. Another myth that can scare people away is the weariness of the using the medications. The medications that treat depression can be strong but if you have the right medication it does not cause you to "feel medicated" or walk around in a haze. If this is the case then you need to try a new medication.

Choosing the right medication is the second most important step in treatment. You and your doctor should talk about your medical history and current medication list to come up with a few prescription possibilities. Most doctors give you a one month treatment to start off a new medication. It takes about 2 weeks to build up a constant stream of medication. During those 2 weeks, your body will go through an adjustment period to the medication. You may feel a little sick for a few days during this period. Do not give up! After this is done, then you will see how this medication is going to work for you. Finding a medication that takes care of all your symptoms is the key and this could take a few different medications to find the right one for you. It is important to know that depression medication is supposed to cure all your symptoms, both physical and mental.

Takeaways
  • Do not be embarassed about being depressed.
  • Stick with it, odds are, the first medicine you try will not be the best for you.
  • It is all worth it in the end.

Great article. I love the fact that you approach depression as a fight. Tired of the "sufferer" approach, I created www.naturaldepressionfight.com and a weekly ezine for it recently. It has the same theme. It's good to see I have company!

Good insights and tips, Beth. It's true that not every medication is right for everybody.
