Haunted Americus, Georgia

Many people may not think much about a small town in the middle of nowhere. Some may not have even heard of it. But it was once "the" place for the well to do to go when winter came to settle in a warmer climate than that of upstate Georgia.

A piece of history lies hidden with the streets of this small town. It's called the Windsor Hotel. Built in 1863 this castle like hotel rests in the heart of Americus. But for some reason ghosts have been known to walk the dinning area as well as the vast stair cases as well as an entire
 floor.

Know simply as the little girl. This spirit has been playing in the hallways on the third floor of the Windsor. It is on this floor where rumor has it her and her nanny where pushed down the broken elevator shaft. After a little digging the truth is known.
The little girl named Emily was playing ball on the third floor when she bounced the ball a little too hard causing it to roll down the hallway. Not paying any attention to the drop coming up mistakenly ran to the opening just as the nanny was coming up the stairs. It was the nanny that startled Emily causing her to fall. Emily grabbed the rail and tried to hold on. The nanny races to catch her but Emily's hands were slipping and both Emily and her nanny fell in.

In the Lobby of this grand hotel is a beautifully crafted staircase. It was here that a bride to be tripped on her own gown coming down and broke her neck. Some say they can see a woman walking down the stairs, only to disappear when she reaches a certain step. They say it was that step which she lost her life. It is tradition now that anyone married in the hotel may not use the stair case to take pictures or use as an entrance. Although there are several people who have taken pictures next to this stair case, they have said that sometimes someone can be seen coming down behind them.

Although Windsor in a lovely hotel, it is not the only spot in Americus to have unwelcome guests. Drive down Lee Street and on to West Glessner. There you will find quaint little homes and a few haunted houses.
