With much publicity in recent years about the increase in childhood obesity in the United States, of equal concern is chronic sleep deprivation among both American youths and adults. This article will explore the consequences of insufficient sleep and suggest guidelines to improve sleep habits. Most importantly, there is a direct correlation between lack of sleep and poor academic, athletic, job performance, as well as motor vehicle safety. A case can probably be made on the number of motor vehicle accidents over the years that have been either indirectly or directly related to sleep deprivation. Youths and adults will see how getting a regular "good night's sleep" affects memory, energy levels, and performance both in school, at work, driving safety, and home-based activities. How Burning The Midnight Oil Causes Burnout

Researchers are citing the many benefits of getting quality sleep including enhanced immunity to illness; slowing the aging process; maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding obesity (childhood obesity may not only be nutritionally-related or contributed to inadequate physical activity, but may also be caused by sleep deprivation); preserving muscle, and preventing conditions such as hypertension, heart disease and diabetes, according to Natural Health magazine (March 2003). And for students studying for an exam, a good night's sleep before a test optimizes the chance for a better grade, according to the Associated Press (October 8, 2003). The AP reported that "getting a good night's sleep before a big exam might be better than pulling an all-nighter. A study found that sleep apparently restores memories that were lost during a hectic day."A Sleepless Society
