While it might not sound like it as you read this review, I previously favored cable high-speed Internet access over standard DSL. But for many users looking for an Internet Service Provider, or bette
r rates, DSL service offers many advantages, including lower cost and with speeds fast enough to please both the average and power Internet user. Note that the DSL Internet Service Providers of even a year ago are not the same as today, with higher speeds and more economical plans.

Is DSL Internet Service Right for You?
The Advantages of DSL over Cable

High-speed Internet access is now affordable for nearly everyone who already pays for dialup access to the Internet. With some broadband (high-speed) Internet Service Providers (ISP) you may actually save money over your current dialup Internet service rates. If you already have high-speed Internet service you may find that if you investigate alternative Internet Service Providers there are more competitive broadband pricing plans available.

The greatest savings for high-speed Internet service typically involves the increasingly popular DSL service, which can be bundled with other telephone services for more savings. In practical terms, DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), is a broadband connection using your home telephone line, but it allows simultaneous voice and data use. DSL doesn't tie up your voice phone line as standard dialup internet service does.

Though cable Internet Service Providers tend to provide faster broadband service, this is not always the case. There are various factors that more readily influence cable Internet service speeds. Not limited to the fact that cable Internet Service Providers use shared access, via the cable line, with other users in a given area. This means that if there is very high traffic, (many users actively online in a given area) you may not achieve optimum or even good broadband speeds. Also, if you have an older computer or otherwise significantly lack computer speed (memory), any speed difference between cable and DSL Internet Service Providers would be negligible.

I think T1 is better than both lol. Once you go T1 you never want to go back! http://afforadablet1.com

Very good information. I would have to disagree that AT&T and Verizon are reliable and cheap. I just switched from AT&T to a better high speed internet service provider. I got blazing DSL speeds! They offer other broadband services like T1, T3, VOIP, OC3, WIFI etc at discount. Check their site out: http://ispsurvey.com

Nowadays DSL service has gotten more reliable than years past, but it still has its issues. For small business broadband I would definitely recommend a t1 line. But it all depends on someone's personal needs. A good website to check out different broadband options is http://bandwidthbuyersguide.com

T1 is quite affordable as well. With T1 you get very fast internet speed and great customer service. Both much better than whatever you get from DSL as cable. Of course, this comes wtih a price but its not as high as some of you might think! For example, try T1 Line Price Quote is the source for price quotes on corporate or residential service. We offer a range of services such as T1 and T3, OC3, co-location, Fiber, Dedicated Services, VPN and more.

Just a few points I have the Verizon DSL 768kbps (96KBps) package for $14.95/mos, 4c less than AT&T which isn't offered in PA. I do get their phone service too which gets a lower rates. Still, it's not much higher than AT&T. Most people do not need more than 96kbps. The only reason to have more speed is luxury or for movies. Most PCs of about the past 5 years have NICs built-in.

This is a great article for those folks still on dial-up. Unfortunately I found out much too long ago myself. I left Earthlink Dial-up and tried out Sprint DSL. It sucked! They didn't tell my mom when calling her that it was NEW to our area and the bugs and glitches hadn't been worked out yet. OOOPS. Well I tried the DSL for 6 weeks. 2 week appointment to get it installed. 4 weeks using or TRYING to use it was beyond belief. It wouldnt work properly for more than short intervals. Sprint said it was Earthlink's fault and vice versa. Finally I told my mom - CANCEL it,I will go back to dial-up! Instead she called our cable company provider to see if they could help us. The next day, a Sunday, they came out and installed my cable modem. I got online instantly and have had NO problems since. For seven years I have been happy with cable as my ISP.
