How to Pack a Diaper Bag for a Day at the Hospital
In the course of your child's life, there will be some instances when the will become sick or injured. Some these childhood problems can lead to a visit to your local children's hospital to be checked out. It was on one of these trips to the children's hospital with my daughter that I realized that
the diaper bag I was carrying was not packed in a way to make it through a long day of appointments with specialists. When packing a diaper bag for a day at the hospital, you need to be ready to be there for a long time.
Step One
Pack enough diapers for your child to be out of the house for at least eight hours. You may think that you are only running to the hospital for a quick appointment with a specialist, only to find out that you have to spend the entire day there. This is what happened to me. I went for a consult on my daughter's foot, after two consults, x-rays, and a fitting for a brace, we were leaving the hospital 6 hours later. For this trip, you will want to place a full size tub of baby wipes into your diaper bag. The small travel packs of wipes will not cut it on a day at the hospital.
Step Two
You will need at least two outfits packed in your diaper bag for a day at the hospital. These outfits need to be ones that are easy to put on. Odds are that when you are trying to change your child's outfit, she will be upset about being examined by the doctor. Keep the clothing simple for the trip to and from the hospital.
Step Three
Pack 3 to 4 bags of finger foods for snacks. You can use the prepackaged snacks or use plastic bags to prepare your own snacks. You will need to pack drinks for your child for your day at the hospital. You can pack sip boxes if your child is able to drink out of a straw. If your child is younger, pack travel screw top bottles of juice. You can pour these into a sippy cup or bottle.
Step Four
The final part of the diaper bag equation for a day at the hospital is to keep your child entertained. You will spend hours waiting in waiting rooms. You had better have some things to keep your child entertained. Bring small books, games, and stuffed animals to keep your child from becoming cranky as she waits for the doctor.
